Does it change with RPM? Is it always present when you are coasting or under power?

The stock 10 bolt is a notoriously weak unit and many have been known to fail. However, before we blame the rear, how about the wheel bearings on the rear axles? They have also been known to have issues.

Ive had 2 of these cars both with relitivly low miles and they both made the same weird noise from the rear. Kind of a metal on metal rubbing noise. And its worse when slowing down or turning. Since they both did it I just figured it was a normal sound.

Actually -- the "metal on metal sound" could be the Torsen posi. Despite the fact that it is a clutchless style posi, the manufacturer recommends using Limited Slip Additive should this noise occur. I've posted this before and can find the link if you want to read it.

G'day and welcome. As Jeff stated, there are a number of things that can cause noises from the rear of the car. With a little more info, we'll help narrow it down.
It's not how fast you can go. It's how fast you can get there.

Here is the quote from Torsen's website: GM issued a technical bulletin adding modifier to the rear axle oil. This was done to quiet what we call a "Rusty Screw" noise that we heard in a very small percentage of vehicles. This does not happen in all cases, however to address owner's concerns we asked that the modifier be used in all instances to insure that the driver would not get this noise. When replacing the fluid it is at the owner's discretion whether or not to add the modifier. Elimination of the modifier does not affect durability of the differential.
