I was able to find a few trials and even a free tool. What data cable does everyone use to hook up to the laptop?

Yeah, an obd2 cable won't do you any good without having an intermediary that is able to talk the same language as the pcm

Hence the reason for no free things out there.

I thought you had an LS1? If its suburu software you are looking for you might want to check out cobb's stuff. I think they are in the $700-1000 range but I hear it is pretty decent.

Is that the enginuity software that the company went out of business? lol

Free only works for as long as someone has extra time on their hands. OBD2 GM stuff is very time consuming, hence the reason most of the companies that offer software have 4+ employees working 10+hrs a day 350+ days per year. You could also have a tuner do the tuning for you, frost is offering some very good prices these days even for mail order stuff.
