2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
If you've done any mods then definitely get a dyno tune. I picked up 18rwhp and 17rwt after dyno tuning (we did a before and after using HPTuners) and all I have are LT's, 3" ORY w/cutout and a CAI.
IMHO handhelds (Hypertech, etc.) are good for changing tire size, gear ratios, and the like but they don't do much for tuning the engine except for leaning it out.

You can buy HPTuners for about the price of a custom tune. If you're any good with computers and cars you should go for it. That way you've got the convenience of a handheld (can tune at home) but the performance of a custom tune.

depending on your ability to understand and comprehend computer tuning, you may be better off getting a handheld versus a full tuning suite.
you haven't done enough research, if you've come to the conclusion that handhelds are a waste of money. hypertech doesn't cut it for anything past stock. predator and the vinci/crane tuners take into account cams, heads, etc...
here's what the vinci tuner can do

i have hptuners and have been making a visual guide about it.

you decide which you will be more comfortable with.Cold Air Intake, Muffler Delete, Vinci High Performance Dual Valve Springs, Hardened Pushrods, Yella Terra 1.85 Rockers, Some Hydropdipped Stuff, Strut Tower Brace, Some SS Badges, boost/vacuum gauge, fuel pressure gauge, some checkered stripes, drilled/slotted rotors, ZL1addons Stealth wickerbill, Ruxifey LED side markers

Dyno tune professionally done would gain you a good amount of hp in my opinion. I leave the tuning for the pros.
