I wouldn't do it. You can get a mail order tune from frost for $125. You can also buy those diablo's used for ~$300.
You can also buy hptuners for less than 700

True, HP tuners is 500.00 and hand programmers are pretty cheap on e-bay...

That's where you mail the PCM to the tuner for him to tune then he mails it back. Still nice to be able to tweak it in your self afterwards.

sounds pretty good. but i figure if i get it done at the shop i can tell them to do exactly wat i need, and they'll do dyno runs to maximize performance. plus it would be great for them to explain the programmer to me

True ! I'm due for the dyno myself... I paid 480.00 and my car went from 10.80's to a 11.70 ..... Don't know what happened there, but I have HP Tuners, so I tuned it back myself... I guess I got the fuel econimy tune ! LOL !!!

I bought a Diablo for $150 and did a wideband tune for $200 here in southeast michigan.

You can go simple with a diablo or get complex with HP, LS1 or EFI.
The advantages of the latter are you can smooooth the tune and improve performance through downloading the run and investigate in each cell.
(read about the programs and you'll understand the statement above)
Requires more time than I have...nor care to invest.
