check gauges light

im buying an 02 z28 tommrow... when i test drove it it was almost out of gas and the check gauges light is on... would it being out of gas cause this light to come on.. the guy said it does but i dont trust him too much.. if anyone knows plz tell me asap before i buy this car, thank you!

Yes...and if it sputters for low fuel it'll throw a SES light too.

dont let it get that low on fuel, because that really trashes your fuel pump, when the fuel level is below a 1/4 the pump has to work extra hard

I burned out a fuel pump when I had my Z28. PITA to replace.

I knew a guy who was playing the "How far can I get with the warning light on" game (some people seriously try this) and actually ran out of gas in the parking lot across the street from a gas station. It killed the pump. Would've been ~$800 to fix at a dealership. He did the repair himself, but the part is ~$400 by itself, and then you have to drop the axel, drop the exhaust, then drop the tank, in order to replace the pump and pickup.
