You still want stock shift points, only stiffer. 5500-5600 or so is about max, after that your powerband drops off sharp. Many people could gain as much as a second in the quarter if they'd stop holding it out to 6000, it's only hurting their times.

um fwiw the stock shift points are set to 6000 & 5900 rpms...so your statement contradicts itself. Btw most stock ls1's make peak hp around 5500 rpms so you generally dont want to shift at or below where its making peak hp.

If you program it to shift hard, you will realize that the stock shift points are actually sooner than the tach is showing you, rpm goes up to 5900 or so due to the tansmission slipping when it shifts. You don't want to shift before peak hp as you say, but you definitly don't want to hold it out higher than the powerband, power starts dropping off after 5600 and by 5700-5800 it is dropping off hard.

lol bzzz wrong again...take a look at a stock bin & you will realize there are 2 flags that command the trans to shift...the first flag is mph the second is rpm. The computer will not attempt to shift until both flags are met. I will state again the stock flag rpm is 6000 rpm on the 1-2 & 5900 on both the 2-3 & 3-4...If you need more evidence I will be more then happy to get a screenshot of this & host it on my site.

Well I can admit I'm wrong if I'm wrong, you can never stop learning I suppose. I don't know if I like it though. . .lol
I drive an M6 and I do know that shifting at 5500-5600 rather than at 6000 picks up almost a second in the 1/4, many trips to the track verify that. I used to always take it to almost 6 grand and was more than surprised to find out how much I was losing just in those few hundred RPM. Did I mention I drive an M6? I shouldn't talk too much about an A4 since I have 5 1/2 years of M6 under my belt and no A4 whatsoever. . .I actually just sold the M6 and bought an A4 so I should catch up on them pretty quick once it gets here, I hope dependable auto shippers doesn't hurt my new baby

my feeling with the m6 is just like an a4 generally speaking it should be shifted at around 6000-6200 in stockish form...but lets say you set your shift lite to 6000 you might not shift until 6300 depending on the driver because it does take time to react. For people that say they picked up time going to 5500 shift points is :BS: to a point because you dont want to shift at peak hp...its all about avg. hp and unless you've got a real funky tq/hp curve shifting right at peak hp will never get you best et's...i assume most of them have their shift lights set at 5500 but probably dont shift until after 6000 whereas with their shift lights set at 6000 they probably were shifting closer to 6500 where the stock cam wont make much power and therefore are loosing some time...maybe.

Thank you guys for your replays but I think there were some fights, calm down.I’ve heard that when u get horse power at high RPM is batter than when u get at low RPM for example if u get 100 hp@6500 RPM is batter than when u get 200hp@3500RPM.
Is that really true?

i dunno if its necessarily bEtter...look at diesels that make 300hp at 2500rpms...thats like 600ftlbs of tq...personally ive seen 15000lb quad turbo diesels in 10's at the track that only make power till around 3500 or 4000 rpms. Again it comes down to avg hp/tq considering hp is a number derived from tq.

Bring me a log of a run with you shifting at 6100 on the money on all your shifts and your time vs. a log of a run with you shifting at 5500 on the money on all your shifts and a timeslip...If your 5500 shift run has a better mph I'll concede but because of your hp/tq curve it "should" never happen. If you want to fight me more on this take it to Pm.

Shifting higher will get you higher mph like you say, but it will get you slower 1/4 times. MPH and 1/4 time do not go hand in hand, example: m6 cars run a better 1/4 at a lower mph while a4s get worse 1/4 times at higher mph generally

stock dyno(my 98 Z with just a borla) with an m6 gear ratio's plugged in...asks for a 6000 rpm shift point. mph & 1/4 "should" go hand in hand...if your running 12.5's @120 theres something wrong...whether they babied it out of the hole because they know they will over power the tire or maybe the just spun out of the hole...if your running 11.5's@110 it probably means your car is dying at the top end for some reason &/or it came out of the hole really hard but just doesnt have the top end. My gtg runs 14.0@99mph...its wrong wheel drive so i have a hard time launching it...if i could cut a 60' in the 1.8's or 1.9's like its capable of I'd run a 13.6@99 so they can go hand in hand but its up to the cars combo, traction, track, driver to get it there.

I havn't been able to open that link in the pm or on here, I just get a blank page. My '97 M6 runs 13.5 at 96 mph, on 2.73s. . .why? That's an honest question too, shouldn't it run slower times at a higher mph considering the gears? Don't trash the 2.73s in an M6. . .lol I don't like the gas pumps so much

huh dunno...i can open it just fine...basically i plopped in the hp/tq at different points of the powerband ie
2000rpm
2500
3000 etc
and it comes up with where you should be shifting to best take advantage of your tq/hp curve...i made peak hp at 5400-5600...it flat lines between there at 297hp through the auto...and the calculator came up with a best shift point of 6000, 5997, 5999 as my shift points. Did you intentionally swap in 2.73 gears? Cuz I know they didnt come stock in your car. at 70mph your car would be idling in 6th gear...thats just funny. As far as trapping higher with 2.73 gears probably not you could literally run 2nd gear out to the traps :shakeshead:Last edited by foff667; 12-06-2005 at 01:16 PM.

In my hometown there's a "dealer" that picks these things up at police auctions etc then plays with em for a while as his own then sells em. He wanted my 3.42s in the auto he had so I got stuck with the 2.73. They were in there before I bought it. At 70 it runs 1400 or 1500ish, can't say exactly. It's a little short of finishing up 3rd in the 1/4. It gets 34-35 on the highway and still runs mid 13s in the 1/4 so I'm leaving them

ya know I didnt even think about this earlier...are you talking about your lt1 or ls1 when your saying if you shift sooner you pick up et? You have an ls1 in your profile but now your saying you have a 97 lt1 car which have two distinctly different tq/hp curves.

Wow didn't read all the posts!! But the original question was a HPPIII Raise the limiter to 6000 rpm. Then try adding MPH + 3 to your program. That should raise the shift points and keep you off the limiter.

Haha, confusion eh. LT1, my bad. I do however hold to my opinions whether on the LT1 or LS1.
