Sebring Silver Metalic- 2002 Camaro Z28
Will a 10 bolt 8.5 from an S10 fit?
I was searching the forums for info on the rear ends used by GM on the s10 and f-bodies. As always my search skills suck and i didn't find anything let helped.
I cam across a s10 8.5 10 bolt for sale. I don't know what year s10 it cam out of, yet. I am going to try and contact the person to see if i can get more details. I was wondering if the s10 rear ends are a bolt in for the 4th Gen f-body?
The 8.5 10 bolt caught my attention because it said is was from an s10 and it was pretty darn cheap, and within driving distance for me.
I know what everyone will say, why don't you just buy a 9" blah blah. Well, for a fraction of the cost....maybe..... I was just curious. Not sure if I would do anything, but curious.
I have a suspicion the s10 rear end might be a little narrower?

I think the length is close enough, but you will need to have brackets welded on to place that rear end under your car. That can be expensive. It would be more cost effective to buy a new 12 bolt or the 9incher.
If you can build a jig of the proper deminsions, so that your new rear end goes right back in like the old one came out, to weld your mounting hard wear on , then you could save money. Most people cant hang a picture strait much less build the proper jig to convert a rear end. Thats also why the after market stuff cost so much .
Good idea though

i wasn't sure if the s10 was narrow compared to the 4th gen. I figured going from a leaf to a spring you would need to weld on the perch.
cost effective, hmmm.... $650 + fab for a 10 bolt 8.5 w/ 3.42s in it or new Moser at oh like $3k. Do you think the fabbing would really run that high? I would take it to a shop for the welding and fabbing. I can't and don't have tools for that.
I was just curious. My inner voice said this was not common, but thought it would be a good conversation.

So True...
I'd keep looking for a good deal on a moser or 9" rear...

Standard S10s' had the 7.5 10bolt,same carrier and pinion stuff as the f-body 7 5/8 10 bolt. Some S10 carrier also had 26 spline axles(no compatability).
If some special S10s' had a 8.5 10 bolt,it is a totally different carrier(from the muscle car era of the 60s'/70s'), but it uses the same carrier bearings(ONLY similarity).

i'm sure it will, thanks.
I talked to the person selling the 8.5 10 bolt. Even he agrees the fabrication cost would be too much. I forgot all about that darn torque arm. I guess I never paid attention to how the 12 bolts and 9" ers were made. I guess that is all factored into the housing when they are making them.
Well it was worth asking at least. I would rather run the question and see what every one says vs. letting a potential deal walk buy. I don't know how much the rear end he is selling is worth, but it seams like a steal.

you know what I wish I could bolt in, that fat rear end from a Dodge Dakota R/T. That thing is a beast. But that would have the same problem, leaf to spring fab, and no torque arm. But man that wouldn't be one tough rear end though. I had no fear beating the crap out of mine when i had one.
