Who's installed 4.10's that whine?
Let me know what brand you got too. I've also heard that it's a "bad install" that makes the gears whine.

NBM / Silver- 00 SS / 71 SS Elcamino
Had Motive performance 3.90's in my 10 bolt. I also have 4.30 Motives in my 9". No whine in both of them.
If you install them in your 10 bolt, have a 6 speed and make some hard launches, Be prepared to get some whine out of them.
Richmonds are netorious for gear whine so I would avoid those as well.2000 SS Camaro Heads, Large cam, Fast 90, 9"w/430's and locker, yada yada yada... you get the picture

You are correct. 99% of the time it's not the gears fault. It's a bad install that makes them whine. I use Richmond gears exclusively because the quality and strength is hard to beat,,,,and mine never whine.
Although many people and shops complain that Richmond gears are noisy, it's more of a result of pinion depth, backlash, etc....that is off kilter.
Most shops are "get it in and get it out" kind of operations unfortunately they don't have alot of time to setup a rearend gear set in a car,,,,,time is money. So they generally setup a gearset with marking compound and call it good. That is not a sure fire way to setup gears. It may get you close but there is no way the naked eye can detect .002 of an inch either way like a dial gauge can,,,,and gears are that critical,,,they don't give you that much room either way to be off. Now some people get lucky with this method, and some shops like Motive gears, and I believe even Moser uses these in their rearends, but I personally don't like them. I believe they run quieter due to a softer material, and to me thats an inferior gear set that just gives the installer more room for error on the install and get away with it.
Not to mention, most shops will do the install with the rearend in the car. Have you ever tried to use a pinion depth gauge while the rearend is in the car?? It's a real pain in the ARSE,,,,and time consuming to say the least. Which is why I prefer the rearend out of the car for the gear install, so I can put it on the bench.
With all that said, not to mention people using aftermarket torque arms, solid bushings, poly bushings etc.....it's easy to see why so many people complain about gear noise.

I have 3:73s and they whine. But the guy before me drove pretty aggresively.

I don't understand why you would want to poll it. Gear whine is a product of what I mentioned above.

I had the rearend in my TA rebuilt with richmonds gears, little noisier than stock but not bad at all. They were stock 3:42s though.

NOT the gears!
As stated it has noting to do with the gears it's due to im proper install.
The pinion depth or the back lash is off!
Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

Update: I've had my motive performance 4.10s in for about 1000 miles with no whine. I did although have an axle bearing go out and that almost messed things up big time! it sounded awful, but i replaced it for only $50. they gears are broken in now and I love them... just need to put in a new fuel pump and finish the tune for God's sake!!!

I disagree. I had 4:10s in my 10 bolt and now have 4:11s in my 12 bolt. Both were dead silent after install. Only after beating and drag racing are they now loud. I think even after a perfect install with abuse they will whine like mofos in anything other than a 9 inch.

I have several cars out here with gears installed,,,4.10 and 4.56's,,,,been together in these 12 bolts for more than 20 years with countless dragstrip passes and they are still quiet as a mouse. It doesn't have to be a 9 inch to be quiet...not sure where that saying came from...I have many happy customers as well that will vouch for this.
LS2tuner is correct, something is off kilter if it's making noise,,,,and 9 times out of 10 it points back to the install and setup procedure.Last edited by Firebirdjones; 06-25-2008 at 04:51 AM.
