    What gears does mine take?

I want to get a 3.73 gear for my 2000 auto trans am. What size gear will I need 7.5 or 8.5....it already has the 3.23 performance axle if that helps any. I am about to purchase new gears and don't want to get the wrong size. And what size should I go with? And what brands are good and strong, and where can I buy them. Thanks for the help, Chris

They are the 7.5" 10 bolt. As far as the brand I have Richmand. I havent beat on them too much yet so dont know about quality. They are a little noisy but the guy that installed them said that all the Richmand gears he has installed made noise. Dont know if it is true or not but the size is right.

Hello there. 7.5 is correct. The old corporate 10 bolt is the 8.5 in ring gear. Not all auto's have 2:73's. If your car was ordered with the performance axle and auto, the axle ratio is 3:23,all other auto's are 2:73 standard. ALL 6 SPEED F-bodies received the 3:42. And in 1999, ALL V8's received the better torsen-zexel limited slip rear end. IF your car has the 2:73 ring and pinion and you want to go to a numerically higher ratio than 3:23 you WILL need to get a different carrier. The 2:73 carrier WILL NOT accept a ring gear bigger (numerically higher) than a 3:23. I know this from experience. I had a 97 LT1 with the standard 2:73 gears and couldnt use the carrier for the 3:73's.
Good luck. The top speed is cool with the 2:73's
BTW, the richmond gear set is not the best, they do whine even if installed correctly. The motive gear set is the best IMO, and use the GM dif additive. Best combo hands down. Best of all, most GM dealerships sell everything you need. The gearset, install kit, and the additive. And you can tell them you work for Joe Blo's shop and most of the time they will give you 25% without even asking you for a tax ID #!
Hope this helps you out before you dig in.

I had motive performance in my 10 bolt, I now have them in my 9" as well. I would recomend them.

I would save your money on the gear swap and just get a new rear end the 10 bolt is a piece of crap. For the $500-600 you will spend swapping gears you'll be on your way to a new 9". Luckily I recouped my money out of my 10 bolt, you might not be so lucky.
