I bought the car used so I have no idea what gears are in the car.

    How do I find out?

Jack the car up put the rear end on jack stands.
Mark a line on the pinion yoke (where the drive shaft bolts).
Now note something on the tire and while you are laying under the car watching your pinion yoke have someone spin the tire exactly 1 complete rotation. Now how many times did the yoke rotate and where did it end up.
If it rotated 3 3/4 turns you have 3.73's etc.

Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

rpo code for the 3.23 is gu5 .and gu2 for 2.73s
code is on the side of the door - i forget the one for 3.42's also depends on if its auto or not. rusty driveshaft = 2.73 aluminum driveshaft = 3.23 is another easy way to check

    hope this helps,

    Bill

3.42 is GU6. Can't always tell by the RPO though, could've been changed (mine says GU2 but replaced them with 3.42's). You can also try a RPM/MPH gear calculator like www.f-body.org/gears/
