    Truck gearing question?

Just curious whether to get 3.73's or 4.10's in a new truck? The 3.73's would be better on gas correct? Not really worried about towing anything.

correct. the smaller the number the more the tire will turn per revolution of the engine.

I have 3.73's in my 04 F-150 FX-4. I hate them no acceleration at all. Trucks need at least 4.10 gears. if not 4.30's. Gas mileage is out the window when you buy a truck anyway.

Yes I know that but im buying it for my father, and he doesn't care whether it goes 0-60 in 3 seconds or 0-60 in 8 days. So I would rather get him the best gas mileage, me personally i could give two shits about gas mileage.

Well then, I think ford's standard gear In a f-150 is a 3.55 I don't know about chevy but should be close to the same. Don't buy a truck with a towing package or the gear will change.

I disagree... tow packages usually come with other goodies like heavy duty cooling, battery, and sometimes a p/s cooler. Even if you don't tow, they're nice things to have, and certainly don't hurt resale.

What kind of truck is it? If it's a GM 3.73's should be okay. If it's a non-Hemi dodge, go with the numerically higher ratio, those trucks can't get out of thier own way. Every little hill causes it to kick out of OD, and there goes your mileage anyway.

my dad bought a Z71 with 4:10 and the gas mileage was actually about the same as his old '93 with the 3:42 gears. not that either one got very good but there wasnt much difference

My dad has an '00 z71 and complains about his gas mileage all the time. I always tell him if he wanted good mileage he should have bought a Honda.

trucks are like muscle cars. No one should buy one for economic purposes.
