anyone who has a 2000-up t56 has a viper 2nd gear. i had the one in my 98 t56 replaced with the current viper gear and its no different the only difference is the larger engagement teeth but it makes no difference in how it shifts

nope the viper has the same gear ratios as fbody's and c5's. the difference is just the size of the dog teeth and the output shaft. they only made 3 stock gear sets for the t56 in cars. one was the fbody/c5/viper with 2.66 1st gear. then the 93 oddball years with 3.36 1st and finally the mn12 set which is the z06 and gto/ctsv version with the 2.97 ratios.

well i wouldnt say that. if you already are tearing down the trans i would go for it. my 2nd gear was grinding from rounded teeth and upon replacing it with the newer gear the synchro teeth on the viper are about twice the size of the 98-99 units so they will take more of a beating.

It uses the same output shaft on the 98 correct, or do I need to get it too?

Yep same output shaft the viper has 30 splines on the end but the gear sizes are the same

Don't forget to get a shim kit and measure end play with the new bearing
