swapping a 99 z28 rea end into a 99 SS
So my rear end went out of my 1999 camaro SS. I already have a rear end out of a 1999 camaro z28 waiting. So my question is is there a difference in the two rear ends? Will it work? I was on the SLP Performance website last night and seen that one of the SS upgrades was a Zexel - Torsen Differential. Is this different than whats in the z28? Any info will be very helpful. Thanks for your time.

There was a change but I can't rember what year it was. I want to say 2000 they went from auburn to the torsen. Open the rear cover and look at it. Auburn is a clutch style and the torsen is a worm gear style. look up pics at eaton and auburn and then you will know what your looking at. Are the gear ratios the same? some Auto Z's came with 2.73 and 3.23's and the 6 speed cars came with 3.42's I think.

The major thing you need to check is whether the rear is from a car with a 3 channel or 4 channel ABS system. They are not compatible with each other, if you car has a 3 channel then you need a 3 channel rear, same with the 4 channel.
Is your car manual or automatic?? If both cars are manual, the gear ratios will both be 3.42. If either is automatic though, the gear ratios will be different, because the Z28 would come with 2.73's and the SS would come with 3.23's.
As for the limited slip units, somewhere around '99-00 they switched from the Auburn cone-clutch style limited slip to the Zexel-Torsen units. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other; the Auburn seems to be stronger, but the Torsen doesn't wear out like the clutch type Auburn does.
