so this is what i got in the rear
so i pulled my gears out this week and got a few questons. just curious. so im installing a set of 4:10s. This is the first thing i noticed no backlash at all. I mean 0. so i pulled out the carrier and there are no shims at all on either side. so i said wow! Started looking it over noticed one of the bearing is ate the hell up. So im kinda glad i started the rear gear change or it could have led to a bigger problem than i could have imagined. any one ever here of something like that before?

Wow !!! No shims... Never seen that before... Are you going to re-use that housing ? I'd consider looking for another.

I think you are OK. Get your backlash where you want it ? I set mine up around .008" - .010" cold...
Anyone else want to chime in with there backlash set ups ???

man thats what i thought. this is my problem. i tried shimming the carrier for my backlash adjustment but it wouldnt go. i got it to go in no shims at all but got the washers in, but it fought me the hole way. It had about .003 backlash, so what i think i need to do is get a case spreader. what do ya think? Im stumped. (o just for some more info. when i took the old gears out there was no shims on the carrier either just the pinon.)

If that doesn't work, do you have enough shims to eliminate the right washer and add a shim on the left ? But, ya, the washers are really, thick shims, and the one could be a different thickness than the other.

ok so out for a drive and it sounds like the rear is winning on acceleration but quiet on coast. i gave it a hard accelerate and sounded like i heard a clunk but only once and never heard it again. like i said it had .007 backlash and the pics show the gear contact pattern.. just wondering what you guys thought

Richmonds usually r noisy but it could be that the backlash is too tight mine usually sits at .010. Better be safe than sorry.......On mine the factory shims didnt work anymore no matter the combo. I went out and bought adjustable shims they have an outter case and u add washers to the inside... Theyre about 40 bucks but worth it imo.

You want to be easy on the gears for the first 500 miles to set everything. Then pull the cover and check everything again and add new fluid.
