Silence, finally!
sssshhhhh!!!
after 30 months of ownership, today my rear end has been quiet for the first time! it took about 4 visits to the repair shop, new gears, and a mac aluminium rear end cover.
...just want to share my joy!
(sssshhhhh.......)

well...., they did all bearings, too, whole rear end overhaul. and it was in germany. i think it came around to 1700 euro, parts+labour (wich i didn't pay, cause it was on warranty).

about 2200 dollar, give or take. doesn't include the rearend girdle. 120 bucks (+ shipping + import for me, of course.)

yeah, that outer rim is prolly over half an inch thick. it's supposed to keep the diff-housing from twisting under accelleration load, but i think it also kills a lot of resonance.

The jack screws tighten up on the bearing caps also adding to the ridgity. Looks great. I have a similar cover and am fighting a no load whine at 30 to 65 mph, really bad at 45, this is after a 3.73 gear install. Really glad to hear you silenced your gears.

Don't put an aftermarket torque arm on with poly mounts or your really going to be pissed! I never knew you picked up so much noise.

I respectfully disagree, I have 3.73's and a BMR Torque arm with a poly mount, and the setup is very quiet, the noise comes from the way the rearend gears are cut, my understanding is that Richmond gears teeth are cut straight up and down opposed to other manufacturers, that will cause a whine.

true, the gears or bearings are always the source of the noise. but a stiffer connection between the axle housing and the frame/body (like a stiffer torque arm with firmer bushings) is a better resonance carrier, and so enhances the noise level in the car. (musical instruments work the same way, guitar or violin: string vibrates = sound >> hardwood or bone bridge connects the sting to the body >> vibration of the body is the sound you hear)
