Cyclone Grey Metallic- 2005 GTO
Rebuild it or replace it?
Welp, my rear has been going for a while now. It's gotten to the point where I can't hear my exhaust over the whine. Needless to say, it's really annoying.
I wanted to replace it with a 12-bolt, but the funds are really readily available, as my transmission needs rebuilt as well.
So here's the choice rebuild the rear and the transmission. How much would just a rebuild run?
Or get the Moser and hope the transmission holds up. Opinons?

get the 12 bolt with 4.10 if manual and 3.73 if auto . Then take it real easy on the car til you can get the tranny fixed, and if you do have the auto get a 3000 stall with the tranny built and your 12 bolt axle will hold up fine

I would get the trans you want and let the 10 bolt go for now. Those things are cheap to get fixed. A lot cheaper than fixing a tranny if you get a new rear end

Well i can afford to rebuild both the transmission and the rearend, i just can't afford to replace the rear end with a Moser AND rebuild the tranny.
I dunno why they are breaking so fast, the car only has 24k on it, and I only have a lid and catback. I suppose I do know why the tranny needs rebuilt, that's my fault. I FUBARed it trying to power shift 3-4. I didn't miss, but it got jammed into 4th really bad. I had to pull over and man handle it out of gear. Bent the 4th fork and screwed the 3rd and 4th syncro, so it needs rebuilt.

6 spds are more likely to break rears as i hear, it's the instant shock of power instead of TC slipage. Ah well, pay to play. Now i just need to talk the wife into paying for both repairs...hmmmm

I had 4:10's in my 10 bolt and they howled extremely loud. I was nervous about it like yourself and got a Strange 12 bolt w/4:11's, Eaton, 33 spline axels, the works. I sold my 10 bolt to a guy in my club with a six speed cammed SS. He made about 40 passes on that rear before he bought a nine inch and that 10 bolt never broke. My 12 bolt now howles almost as loud as the 10 bolt did after some 1.7 sixty foots. Rebuild the rear if you want but your wasting your money. Do the trans and save for another rear.
