Rear Gear Upgrade Opinions
Currently I have a 1998 Firebird A4 with 3.42 gears in it currently.
The StreetFighter Torque Converter(about a 3,000 to 3,500 rpm stall speed) and trans Go shift kit will be installed over the winter, but want to upgrade the gears next week and want a base line of the car before the conv and shift kit get installed. Going in a A4 with 3.42 in it to 3.73 or 3.90.
The car is driven around town and on the freeway for fun. What gears do people recomend that have an A4 that has upgraded have to say.Last edited by bigboykilroy; 09-24-2007 at 11:57 AM.

Well i had 3.73s in my formula, that had 2.73s, i felt a big difference, but if you want to do freeway racing, i have a friend with a 94 z28 auto with 3.42s and he says he love them.

Obviously you will notice a difference, however goin 3.90s with a a4 is just stupid unless its a track only car, at like 60mph you wil lbe at like 3000rpms.

What exactly is the difference between 3.73, 3.90, and 3.43? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Well I have decided to put this question to the test.
I just purchased a set of 3.90 gears for my 1998 Firebird A4 that currently has 3.42 gears in it.(yes I know the A4's didnt come with a 3.42 but my car is a v6 to ls1 conversion)
My engine/trans guy has donated his time to help us get some numbers on this often asked question.
I should be getting the gears this friday afternoon, I will be running the car on Sat, I will post up the before and after numbers along with the HP tuneres log file (for the People who have it)
I Will keep you all Posted !!Last edited by bigboykilroy; 09-24-2007 at 04:16 PM.

Nice man, I dont see many people go with the V6 to LS1 conversation. So how was it? Can't wait to get some results on the car.

it was an awsome experience, i would do it again in a heart beat. I bought the car when i was 18, could not afford ins on a v8 at 18, so i got the w68 (V6 ver of the WS6) So after it was paid off, decided since the car was with me all this time and it never had a prob, it was time to reward her with a mighty ls1 v8. I know i could have bought a v8 now in life but she was so good to me and i knew her history. So what the hell I went for it. All in total the upgrade/swap was about $4000.00. But also included Upgrades - MAC Headers, No Cats, Magna Flow Wide open Exhaust, Alum Drive Shaft, and the HP Tuners Software.

OK did a drive on the freeway today just crusing in OD, just as you would taking a "Sunday Drive" on the flat straight freeway. Here is the speeds and RPM on my car with a stock converter, and the 3.42 rear end and 26 inch tall tires.
50 MPH - 1550 RPM
55 MPH - 1700 RPM
60 MPH - 1850 RPM
65 MPH - 2000 RPM
70 MPH - 2150 RPM
75 MPH - 2300 RPM
80 MPH - 2450 RPM
85 MPH - 2650 PRM
90 MPH - 2800 RPM

I have not put the 3.90 gears in yet, They should be here on friday. The above posting is a baseline with the 3.42 gears. I will post another 50 - 90 speed vs RPM once we install the gears over the weekend. Then I will also post my track times before and after as well.
