Rear end noise
The rear end in my '98 Z28 appears to be loose. It clanks almost all the time when I shift. Is this a backlash adjustment problem. If so, can a backyard mechanic do the adjustment or should it be taken to a pro? Would worn gears make the same noise? Thanks

It could be a couple things... Check your universals in the drive shaft, check the torque arm mount up at the transmission, check all the control arms to make sure they're tight. Then, if everything else is OK, pull the rear cover off and look inside. There's a magnet on the rear cover & if you have pieces floating around, it should catch them.

Thanks for the help. U-joints OK. Just had the rear end rebuilt for $900. Could it be backlash or worn gears?

Ouch... I guess you have an M6 ? It would take a lot of back lash for this. Can you check your back lash ? I'd pull the rear cover off then and look inside, or have who rebuilt it check it.
It is common for the torque arm bushing to bang on shifts, or the exhaust hitting the underside.
I guess I'm to far away to ride shot gun !!! LOL
