    Realistic Expectations From 3.73

I have a lightly modded 1998 Z28, 6 Speed pushing about 375 hp/400 tq and was wondering if it is really worth it to step up to 3.73's. I'm not worried about the speedo, my shop has tools for that so it would be free. The car is driven mostly as a daily driver but occasionally sees some drag strip and autox use. What kind of performance gains should I see? I thought about 4.10's but it just seems like too much gear. I wish someone would make 3.91's for F-bodys

    Thanks

I will suggest you get the 4.10. B/c from 3.42 (I think that is what you have in you car now) to 3.73 is very small difference and you won't feel the difference and not worth to spend the money. Since you have a six speed, with the 4.10 you still have good speed and gas mileage on the freeway.

I just went with 4.10's in my M6 00 SS and I love them. It didn't hurt my mileage and it has a lot more pick up to it. I wouldn't waste the money on the 3.73's. There is just not a big enough difference to justify doing it.

sweet. thanks for the info. in another post, i said something about motive making 3.90's by march of next year, but if 4.10s aren't too much gear, i will probably stick with that.
Realistically, whats the chance of breaking a stock rear with 4.10's on my car?
The car is street driven mostly with occasional track use, pretty much stock, intake, exhaust, and a very mild "stealth" cam, with a stage 3 clutch, street tires. When i launch at the strip, i launch fairly low to be nice to the drivetrain. I've heard that the rear end will hold for a good long time if you don't thrash it really hard really often.
Also, if it does break, what part(s) usually break? Is it going to be more likely to be something like a carrier or a twisted axle?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you plan on hooking up and launching hard with tires that will stick...if you just spin your tires it should last a long time.

Even a stock M6 car can bust the rearend.

i just went from 3.73 to 4.10 in my 99 z28 and i like the 4.10s better , much more fun to drive. car just pulls through the rpms faster and acceleration is better too! HIGHLY RECOMMEND 4.10
