question on pinion bearing race installation
I am going through a 10 bolt with a little over 100k miles on it, I will be replacing the pinion bearings and do not have a tapered cone to hammer in the race. Does anyone have experience setting these without the proper tool?
I have set bearing races in the past by hammering the race edges with a brass punch, not sure I want to try that in this application.
Would appreciate any comments.

Tools are expensive but so are rears lol. even if you have to have a shop do it or buy the tool to do it, it will be worth knowing it's been done the best you can. I used to do the same thing with rotors and had my share of bearings go bad from not setting them correctly.

Yeah I don't see a easy way around it, the inside cone is too large to set a socket on the lip and drive it in. Thanks for the reply.

I was considering trying to use the old race as a setting tool but have never tried it. One of the orielly stores will loan out a race driver. Thanks for the suggestion, as it turns out they are the only place in town that will loan or rent the tool. The rental shops and other parts stores were no help.
