    new gears

I'm thinking about getting new 4:10 gears to put on the bird to replace the 3:73's (or 3:23's, not really sure) I've got right now. I'm running a 14.1 at the track currently. Will the new gears make a difference in my ET at all? I'm crossing the finish at about 99 mph and at around 4600 rpms. Thanks for the help.

It will but you'll need better tires to hook. Before I went 4.10's I was using Nitto 555r's to run and was hooking alright but after the gears I had to upgrade to mickey thompsons cause my drag radials were spinning like a mofo.

    yup.

if your car is Automatic it came with 3:23(performance) or 2:73(base)

GU5 is the rpo for the 3:23s, I don't know the rpo code for the base gears

Is there a website where I can get drag radials for a good price? I don't have too big of an income right now

What is the DA where you run? Just wondering because 14.1 is pretty slow...unless of course your DA is the cause.

What does DA mean? And I'm running slow because I'm pretty much stock. Just a cai and a catback

Gee....I thought that even at stock a Trans Am does better than 14.1. What's the deal? Is there something else to this?

Age and power loss. I ran a 15.3 when it was stock. And that was the fastest I could get it to go. The stock intake had rat crap, pine needles and twigs in it from when it sat for 6 months and rats made it their home.

He is an LT1 so he is right where he should be.

What size tires are you running? I thought some LT1 cars "could" come with 3.42s in the automatics? He should just check door codes and see what he has. At least he wont have as much drive-line lash with being automatic if he swaps his gears.

Ill check the code when I'm out of class. All I know right now is I'm running a 16" rim and its 8" wide

    Aren't 4.10's a little steep for an LT1?

    Wouldn't 3.42's, or maybe 3.73, be a better choice.

I'm not expert on gears, but 4.10's don't sound right to me.

And search the drivetrain section...you'll find alot of guys telling you that there are no ET gains to be had with gears, and a new torque converter is the way to go.

And IMO, if you do have the 3.23's, I'd agree with that. Alot of guys can see a .5 sec reduction in ET from a converter.

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldent 4.10's weaken the stock rear since they have smaller teeth, add that and better tires and your rear wontbe around much longer

I will put it in simple terms so everyone will understand (including myself )...

Let's say you own a manual stick shift...you can basically keep the RPM up high and control it...so when you want to race someone you downshift to get the RPM up into the power band.

With an auto, you can't really do that...so the answer is...a stall or torque converter. If you have a 3600 stall, it's like launching the car at 3600 RPMs.

Best I know how to explain it without getting too technical about it

If you want to get into the nitty gritty...read this article.
