Need a New Auto Trans 80,000 Miles

my cousin just got a new T/A with 78,000 miles at the time of purchase it has 80,320 miles now,the transmission won't catch 2nd gear my question is with proper care & rountine maintenence how long does the 4 speed automatic in the 4th generation fbody usually last without any issues ???? now i know with sports cars ppl beat on them more often & i know that plays a part in it too,but how reliable are these transmissions? T
Another question i have is what year Camaro or T/A can he get the transmission from? i was thinking 98-02 but i may be wrong any advice is helpful thanks

Some last the life of the car. Some not 10,000.
Mine went at just over 38,000. This was before any modding or hard abuse. Just broke the sun gear accerating onto the highway.
Since the rebuild I have put just about abother 38,000 on it. Lots of mods later and mostly hard, abusive driving. I have 76,000 now without ny issues.
It depends on build quality of the transmission, maintenance and abuse.
Basically: Your guess on transmission life is as good as anyone elses.

Depends on how hard you drive it and how hot you get it.

The 4L60E has some inherent weaknesses. Here is a good comparison of stock versus aftermarket: http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153471

Another thing to consider is heat -- it is a transmission's worst enemy. A supplemental cooler, flushing of the stock cooler, and/or installation of a deeper pan can all help extend transmission life.

Query,, Does the car serge sometimes like it's in gear when you cold start it in park?

5 years ago I had the trany adjusted for shift firmness @ the dealer I purchased it from and today I am having the exact same symptoms with it as you're describing..

If I stay out of it, it shifts fine..

If I go WOT from a dig it will "hang" in first and then shift poorly into second..

Durring these/those times the engine starts not liking that and I have to lift..

I was actually glad that our car is an auto -- when I joined the site I kept reading about all the problems the manual trans guys were having: bent push rods from missed shifts, eliminating the skip shift, broken rears, bent forks, busted driveshafts, clutch pedals stuck to the floor, clutches not shimmed properly...

V6's the 5spd tho it is not anything to write home about, rarely have as much trouble in stock form..

Plus if you want to drag race auto's rule.

    They are way more consistant.

The M6 is only good for road racing and impressing 16yr olds.

I actually prefer driving a manual transmission equipped vehicle. This is actually the first time in my life that my DD has not been a stick.

I agree. I hit the rev limiter enough with the auto. I would have smoked the ls1 with the 6spd by now.

found out what the problem was,the trans had a leak that he didnt know about & was out of fluid,I dont know how long he drove it without any fluid though, thats why we have to regularly check all our fluids

No fluid can be a problem. Is it toasted completely?

no,it was supposedly rebuilt 3 months ago,but the old transmission just would start slipping in 2nd gear,we never really took it on the road to see if we could get it over 50 mph or over he just left it parked until he got the new trans, new trans, well used trans seems to be pretty solid,my uncle really got into to see if the trans was worth it & i must say this car ROCKS!!!!!!

Keep the heat down, install a trans cooler.. my b4c had 80k when i got it, i beat on it pretty hard with 10 or so times down the track and WOT every so often, i had a shift kit installed though to help it last. I now own a M6 and can say that sometime i miss the auto for the consistant runs, but the feel of the m6 is so much better.
