    Moser-9 I got the blues

I've been running a Moser 9, detroit locker, and Richmond 4.11's for about 10 yrs. Noise was always unacceptable, but with the rag top down, long-tube headers and a cut-out I managed to co-exist with the noise around town and short hops. Recently after I couldnt tollerate the noise any longer, I took the pig to a Moser specialist to overhaul the pig and swap up to Motion 4.56's. When I left with the overhauled pig, the mesh on both coast and pull were perfect. After re-installing the pig, the noise was trippled in every speed. Totally undrivable. I saw the perfect mesh pattern on the gears with my own eyes.

What could be causing this noise? Could a screwed up or mismatched reluctor ring be the problem?

I am open to all suggestions or explaination regardless of how silly they may sound. Please help?

Is the noise constant, or only on accel. or decel.? Could it possibly be a bearing noise?

    Hi Knight, Thanks for respondiong.
The noise is dominent at 10 mph even over longtube headers, off road Y-pipes and Loud mouth LM1 cat back. The noise level is progressive and relative to MPH. This aspect of the issue really does smack of bad bearings, but the pig overhaul encluded all new bearings.

I don't understand what I know about the traction control channel (channel 4) and the reluctor ring. I'm afraid it might be silly to suspect that the issue is due to rearend housing and setup being for the 3-channel reluctor ring miss-mated with the traction control.

It seems illogical to me to have traction control and a detroit locker installed on a car that will never be in the snow.

I am really really puzzled and frazzled over this issue.

Were the axle bearings replaced too?

With 4 channel abs/tcs, the reluctor rings are on the ends of the axles, behind the brake rotors. If you remove the rotor, you should have access to see the reluctor ring, and the sensor. I wouldn't expect those to be the source of your noise though.

Have you also checked the emergency brakes, and regular brakes too, for any noise from them?

By the way, I'm just around the corner near Middlefield.

Think it might just be noise transfer through the chassis?

    Howdy Neighbor.
Seems that the reluctor rings are a variable that can be eliminated from suspicion, huh?
I did not check the emergency brakes. Oddity about the rear brakes is that on the passenger side, the inside pad is worn down almost to the metal while the outside pad doesn't have as much wear.

The axle bearings were replaced as part of the overhaul process.
The torque arm is a proto-type intended for convertibles.

Noise transfer through the chasis is unlikely for several reasons such as....
The current noise is 10-fold louder than the previous rearend gears.
The car is considerably loud which partially masked the noise from the previous rearend. The current noise can be heard over the exhaust noise.
Long-tube headers, Off-road Y-Pipes, SLP Loudmouth LM1 cat back. This combo is LOUD

    Hey there, neighbor.

Do you ever go to the Laural Square car show on Saturdays?

I was hoping to go to that show this Saturday, but My rearend issue has me walking.

The rubber boot on the backing plates deteriorates and allows water and road grime into the parking brake mechanism. This may be why one side wore out faster than the other.

Just a thought, are you sure the noise is from the rear diff.? Could it possibly be from the tranny? What exaxtly does the noise sound like? Any possibility of getting it on vid?

Is the noise present during accel and decel?

Is the noise more prominent during one or the other ?

The noise is present in both accel and decel (which is indicative of a bearing). But the bearings are new replacements and I hesitate to suspect new bearings.

I'm prepared to replace either the 3rd member assembly or the housing but not both. And I'lll have to sacrafice other components on my list of Mods to do.

Have you talked to the installer? If it is indeed 10X louder now, I would have to assume that the rear-end wasn't set-up properly. Either the wrong preload, backlash, or pinion depth.

That is the only thing that has been changed on the car with the noise increase correct?

If I were not the only one to have experienced this issue, I could get advice and not have to go through this process of elimination.

Well subscribed for what others have to say. I have a Moser 9" with 4.11 gears and mine is quiet.

If a rear end is set-up properly, there will be no noise or at worst case, very minimal noise...period. Anyone who tells you otherwise is pulling your leg.

Any way you can video tape the noise and post it? Jack the car up in the rear, video tape it while accelerating/decelerating?

I don't know how likely that would assist as I have a similar exhaust set-up (LT's, ORY and LMII) and I know how loud yours must be
