    moser 12 bolt fill plug.

wth, been a rough weekend, took the rear diff cover off my moser 12 bolt to change fluid and friction modifier(got the standard chrome cover)and when i got to the fill plug to add new fluid it did not have the square 3/8ths plug like the stock axle or any other axle i have seen has,it had a six sided plug, looked kinda like a 9/16ths socket,i don't have anything to remove this damn plug with and the car is sitting with no fluid in the axle(glad it's not my DD).does anyone know what tool i need to buy to remove this plug so i can put fluid in the axle? thanks!

p.s. you would think moser would include this tool with a $2500-$3000 12 bolt complete axle.or at least tell you wtf you need to buy to remove the fill plug.if i could do over again it...............

    Is it a torx?

I'll one up you -- went to drain the oil out of my Moser after the 500 mile break in and the drain plug pulled the threads out of the aluminum cover. I ended up drilling and tapping the hole for a larger plug. I was totally steamed at Moser over that fiasco.

Not a torx, looks like a socket 14mm or 9/16ths,a bolt head of that size fits in there like it would in a normal socket.guess I should have taken a pic.

Allen head. You should be able to pick up a set for around $10 at Autozone and such.

    Allen head,thanks Jeff

I tried getting a bolt and screwed a nut on the threaded end,but the only one I had that was close was a pinch too small.

The Moser rear I worked on had a plug with a 9/16" socket,I just used a piece of 9/16' steel hex stock (about 1 1/2" long) in a 9/16 standard ratchet socket to remove it.

I eventually acquired a proper tool

    google search Wright Tool 4218

So after work I go to sears to get the 9/16ths hex socket so I can put fluid in my moser 12 bolt, found exactly what I need on sears mobile website and when I got to the local sears I could not find the socket,so I get one of the sears employees to help,he quickly looked in the same place I did and after about 30 seconds of looking he said 'you will have to get it off the internet' and he walked off to help a woman that walked up.wtf! Now this was a regular full size sears, not one of the little sears they have in some small towns.so I walked out and went to Auto Zone, found a three piece set for what sears wanted for just the 9/16ths.worked perfectly! F U sears, other places sell tools too.

Sear Roebuck's "solution" to being near bankrupt was to buy the already bankrupt K-Mart chain dp stores.. Nuff said..

Sears used to be great in the 60's and 70's. You could buy anything under the sun there. I still have old Sears catalogs here from the 70's that is about 8" thick with things inside you wouldn't believe you could ever find at sears if you weren't familiar with them back then. You could even buy guns in Sears up until about 20 years ago.

Unfortunately they have gotten stingy, and don't carry near the stuff they used to carry. Now that they carry the cheap china tools with no warranties along side the Craftsman lifetime stuff all on the same wall,,,for nearly half the price,,,it's killing sales. When Joe Shmoe walks in and see's that he can buy a socket for .79 cents verses $6,,,then who cares if it breaks,,,I can buy 6 more for that price. They don't take into account your time and gas spent running back to the store 6 more times though That's just the type of mentality this country deals with now unfortunately.

I've gotten the same thing Bill when I've walked in looking for something. The obscure tools they once had are no longer. One of these days I should walk in and plop that 20 lbs. Sears catalog on the counter and watch the faces of the sales clerks behind the desk I do like the craftsman tools for the simple fact that they are easily accessable since just about every town has a Sears. It's about the only place you can buy tools with a lifetime locally. Otherwise it's ordering from places like Mac, Snap On, etc...because no one around sells that stuff outright. Then you play the "hurry up and wait" game.
Every town needs a good outlet with lifetime tools that you can walk in and out of any day of the week. That should be a law.
