Gearz?
Hi, I was thinking about changing the gears on my stock 01SS m6. Iv'e owned and driven other LS1 f body cars in the past and my father's 99 SS M6 always seemed like it had steeper gears in it than the others cars that Iv'e driven.
I guess my my first question is:
Is there anyway to find out what the final drive ratio is in my car vs. my father's car and (2),
What are good street gears, 3:73s or 4:10's?
I'm not sure what dad has but I wouldn't be surprised if he had 4:10s. I'm not looking to race it so I don't want put a 12 bolt in it right now. I'm just looking to make the car a little more more fun to drive.
Thanks, Mike

4.10s are most likely what you want
it's what most 6 speed guys use prefer

Yea I have 4.10's on my m6. It did make the car more fun to drive but 1st gear is practically worth nothing now and at highway its still pretty good. At 70mph I'm at exactly 2k rpm. I still have the stock 10bolt as well and she does whine a little but she's hanging in there. 3.73's are more for the auto guys too.

Black- 99 WS.6 - Modified
Check your RPO sticker on the door and see which of these codes is on there:
GU1 : AXLE REAR, 2.41 RATIO
GU2 : AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GU4 : AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 : AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
GV1 : AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GV2 : AXLE REAR, 5.83 RATIO
GV3 : AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GV4 : AXLE REAR, 3.36 RATIO
GV5 : AXLE REAR, 3.55 RATIO
GV7 : AXLE REAR, 4.11 RATIO
GV8 : AXLE REAR, 2.72 RATIO
GW2 : AXLE REAR, 2.56 RATIO
GW3 : AXLE REAR, 2.56 RATIO
GW4 : AXLE REAR, 3.31 RATIO
GW5 : AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GW6 : AXLE REAR, 3.27 RATIO
GW8 : AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GW9 : AXLE REAR, 2.93 RATIO (DUP WITH GU3)
Not all of these were available in our cars but I'm too lazy to weed out the ones that don't apply. This will tell you what the car came with from the factory. As for gear choice - as stated people with M6s usually run a 4.10, whereas people with A4s usually run a 3.73.

Thanks Knight. I have "GU6" which is the 3:42s.
I talked to my father tonight and he said first gear in his car feels kind of useless. When he starts out from an intersection he puts in 2nd almost right away. I'm thinking he must have 4:10s in it.

Ok next question. Is it something I can do myself? This website that I'm looking at has a DIY "installation kit" that comes with new bearings, seals and shims.
Also, I'm guessing I'll need a new speedometer gear.

1999 Formula WS6 M6-sold- 2001 Silverado Z71
speedometer is fixed through reprograming the computer. Gear swap is not a DIY thing. There are precise measurements and special tools required. However, many people successfully do it after reading up on it. others get scared away after reading up on it and pay a shop to do it

Ok thanks. I thought I remembered SLP selling a speedometer gear but maybe I was thinking of another car.
I'm thinking I'll just pay a shop to do it. If it wasn't for the precise measurment part I would do it myself.

I found this tuner on the same website:
http://www.lmperformance.com/16427/1.html
You can recalibrate the speedometer and other stuff with it. Otherwise I guess I can send it out somewhere to get reprogrammed. Ugh! Nothing seems easy with these cars.

THIS...
Did you get the car new? If not, just because the RPO code says you have a 3.42 doesn't mean that the previous owner didn't swap gears in it at some point. Just saying...
You could double check by marking your drive shaft and turning your wheel 1 revolution. Count the number of revolutions the drive shaft turns. If your drive shaft turns say 3.5 times, you have a 3.42. If it turns 4 times, you have a 4.10. Easiest way to check it.
Also, I wouldn't attempt changing the gears myself...but if you feel up to the job, good luck.

Thanks, I'll have to get a hold of frost. Is he on this forum? That controller looks cool too, though I don't know how much I can really tune with it.
I didn't buy my car new and neither did my father. His was a recovered wreck. It was totalled on a road coarse and I'm pretty sure it was modified so I wouldn't be surprised if it had a gear swap.
I tried turning the wheel with the car jacked up but I trhink I need to have both wheels turning at the same time which would require actually rolling the car on the ground.

I found FROST. He's on the east coast which is good and he gets $125 for a tune which isn't bad either.
I'm also going to need a paddle pin kit (#64002) for the 4:10s install but I can't find it on line anywhere. I'm hoping when I call to order the gears they can help me.
