3.73's?
I have an M6 02 SS, not a daily driver and I had 4.10's installed and I really like them. Doesn't seem like you'd see much difference w/3.73's though. My rpms are @ 300-400 higher at any given speed over the 3.42's.

Are you sure that is all the difference in your RPM's over the 3.42's. My friend has 4.10's in his SS and it was more like 500-600 RPM difference over his stock 3.42's. Also, he hardly ever uses 1st gear to start off from a stoplight...only uses 1st gear when drag racing. How about your car...do you use 1st gear at stoplights around town or is it too low? I have an M6 02 SS that I am about to install 3.73's in because I did not want the 500-600 RPM difference with the 4.10's. My car is not a daily driver but I do like driving it on trips sometimes and 500-600 RPM's is a lot of difference over stock.

Gears
Yeah, my 02 SS M6 tachs @ 1600 rpm in 6th gear at 60 mph which if I remember right my 3.42's were @ 1200. I do use 1st gear in town some but it's pretty short and don't really need it. All the stuff I read was 4.10's for an M6 and 3.73's for an A4 so I feel pretty good about my choice.

Thanks for the reply. It is strange......I heard the same thing but my friend had 3.73's in his car first before he went to 4.10's. Now he tells me that he wish he hadn't sold his 3.73's because he has to make an extra shift sometimes at the end of the quarter mile. He feels like the car is quicker off the line but loses a little at the end of the quarter...makes sense really. Sounds like you can't go wrong either way but now I wish that I had purchased 4.10's if your car is only taching 1600 rpm in 6th gear at 60 mph. Just my luck!

try a 3.90 gear, my buddy went 13.2 stock in the m6 2000 formula with 3.42, now runs back to back 12.70s, still gets 25 mpg on the highway

Get 4:10s. I daily drove my 6 speed w/4:10s for a few years. Gas milaege was barely affected. There's no reason at all to get 3:73s instead of 4:10s unless you're spraying. Take it from someone who's actually DONE IT. Btw, you'll still cross the traps in 4th.

Dont recall RPMs in 4th crossing traps, I have an aftermarket cam in there for about 3 years now with a 6,500 rev limiter so that was a while ago. I only raced my car a few times when I had my stock 10 bolt w/4:10s (have a Strange 12 bolt w/4:11s now) it got pretty loud gear whine. I sold it to guy with a cammed SS and he made about 40 passes on it before getting a 9 inch and it never broke on him. He was lucky tho. If you're gonna be drag racing this thing I'd say just skip the gear swap and save for a better rear end cause it will break no matter what gears you have in there sooner or later.

I have Motive performance 3.90's in mine with the 6 speed. Absolutely love them. Don't waste your money on the 3.73's with the 6 speed. You will throw away $400-$500 and really not notice the difference. My rpms went up 400 rpm at 75 mph. 3.90s still give you a little more use out of 1st gear. If you bought a camaro for gas milage Shame on you. Go buy an import.
I think the 3.90s are a good alternative to the 4.10s if you drive your car on a daily basis. As for me, I wish I went to 4.30s because mine is a weekend warrior. Anyway hope this helps2000 SS Camaro Heads, Large cam, Fast 90, 9"w/430's and locker, yada yada yada... you get the picture

black- 2001
I was ready to order gears for a 2001 six speed, and the guy at the parts house told me I would also need an SLP paddle kit if I have a Torsen Posi.
He could not tell me what its for,but it cost $175.00. I would like to know what its for, before I order anything. Any help appreciated.

i got 373's on my m6 and i noticed a difference at first then got used to it. seems like its that way for everything, its never fast enough. the rearend shop did tell me if i got 4:10's that i would be back getting 373's pretty soon, said the stock 10 bolt is to small for the 4:10's it the metal doesnt have enough time to cool down.
