do I REALLY have a 2 series Carrier?

I pulled off the diff cover at work yesterday and was going to start my gear swap/overhaul, but before I took the carrier out I noticed the pinion gear that was installed was a lot larger than the 3.73's I was going to swap in. I know my car has 2.73 gears because I have seen the build sheet and the car cruises at 1500 RPM's between 60 and 70 mph.

I also emailed ws6store.com (Very Helpful and quick responses BTW) and verified the part number. I have the correct gears for a 2 series carrier.

so does this sound like I have the right gears?

The new ring gear should be a lot thicker than your stock one. The higher numerical ratio moves the ring gear teeth closer to the pinion as it is smaller in diameter. A 3-series carrier would have different backspacing to make up for this offset, so a thicker gear is not required. Sounds like they got it right for a 2-series carrier.

ok thanks. it just threw me off by the big size difference. I knew going from 2.73 gears to 3.73's would be a big difference, but not this big.

You can take a rough measurement to check it. Pinion centerline to face of carrier (back of ring gear) should be identical on both sets. Lay your new ring gear on a flat surface and have someone hold the pinion gear horizontal to it with the teeth engaged so you can take a measurement of the new set.

ok so I got the gears installed and I am extremely happy. I am still only at 2200 rpms at what I think is 65 mph (no tune to fix the speedo yet). I am thinking I should have went with 4.10's, but o well I am still happy. the ring gear was MUCH thicker to make up for the difference in pinion gear size like stated above.

    thanks for all the help.

2.73 upgrade to 3.73 is the general consensus recommended gear mod. ENJOY !

I love the added kick in the ass. I cant wait to see what its like after I get the built transmission tuned and get the speedo corrected. I can tell its having problems figuring out what to do since the speed is off.
