Clip Clop - Drivetrain noise. Help?

    Hi All,

    I have a 1998 SS M6 w/ 189k miles on it.

I'm noticing that there is a distinct 'clip-clop' noise (yes, like a horse) coming from what seems like the left rear of the car at speeds over 25mph, in gear and under acceleration. Noise goes away when i take my foot off the gas, so I ruled out rear-end/wheel bearings. (could be wrong).

Any thoughts on what this might be?

    Thanks...

With that many miles, I would start by putting the car in the air and checking both the wheels and driveshaft u-joints for any wobble or play, including end play, side-to-side, up/down and rotational. Also check the tires for broken cords, bumps or objects stuck in the tread. Spin the wheels by hand while in neutral and see if you can feel or hear anything unsual. The brakes may be hanging up and if this is the issue you should be able to detect this by their smell or by the wheel becoming excessively warm. If you do not find anything suspect, with the car safely in the air and the front wheels chocked, you can then start the engine and run the car in gear to see if anything becomes noticeable. Note that this may trip your traction control or ABS warning light, if so equipped. Keep someone in the driver seat to shut it down should a problem arise and keep your hands, hair and clothes away from the driveshaft and tires. If this all checks out, I would then take a look at your control arm bushings for excessive play.
