4.10 gears good or bad idea

i was told by a mechanic that a bearing is going in my rear so i was thinking if i'm going to get that replaced i should just do 4.10 gears now instead of in the future. my car is a 6 speed but i am nervous i won't get any traction with street tires and if i use slicks i'll blow the rear. What do you guys think.

    Thanks Frank

Depends what you drive like. Spinning the tires is easier with 4.10s and street tires. Slicks could contribute to blowing your rear. I have em and love em. If you're in there anyways, might as well.

I f*cked up a set of 4.10 gears that were in the car when I bought it, what brand, I don't know. The guy who fixed it put a high dollar set of gears in it (without permission). But, I have put a LOT of pressure on them, I haven't heard a peep. They aren't completely quiet, but quieter than the other set. I don't remember what brand, but I will try to find out. Can't be too many 400 dollar gear sets around.

No one brand is better than the other. Just make sure they replace all the bearings and seals. Don't want any unnecessary noise. And make sure it is a reputable place that installs them.

4.10's are great. And yes it will be easier to spin the tires. I turn less RPM's at 6 with then then i did when i had my a4 with stop gears

Get the 4.10s. You will definately feel the difference! I still have the stock rear end, so no dumping the clutch off-the-line. But from a roll, even a slow roll, like, at a light, and I punch it...WOW! Let me just say, WOW!

What ind of difference have you notice in RPM vs. MPH. Mine stock now 6sp with 3:42s runs 88mph at 2000 RPMs in 6th gear. How much will that change with the 4:11s?

A good way to figure it is to mulitply your current RPM at a given speed and add 20% to it. I used to be a 1500 RPM at 65, now I'm around 1800 at the same speed. Going from 3.42:1 to 4.10:1 is a .68 difference, or 19.88% increase. You also have to figure using about 19.88% more gas too though...
