4.10 gear install was 928 bucks!!!!!

I was charged almost 1000 dollars to install new 4.10's and replace the broken 4.10's. The guy paid almost 400 bucks for new gears, according to the parts list! WTF! I thought gears were only about 200 bucks, maximum. And, it was a crappy little 7.5 inch gear set. Then, he charged me 300 bucks in labor. I will never let someone else do a job I could do myself again. I put 4.10 gears and another set of 3.42's in a GM 12 bolt, and never had any trouble from them. I would have did this myself, but I figured by the time I bought tools, I would break even. Wrong! For you do it yourselfer's out there, KEEP DOING IT YOURSELF! So much for my tax refund money, it has been thrown up a wild hog's ass.

Man I got my gears for $230 shipped and installed for free under warranty. My brother installs them for about $150. Man that is outrageous.

Oh yeah, and he had my car for two weeks to do a 4 to 5 hour job! Bummin' a ride for that long is bad enough, not to mention the outrageous charges. Don't ever go to Excel Auto in Durham!

Maybe be a fat bag of hydro in the passenger seat would have made me feel better about it!

Hell yeah man, I vote for the hydro too! Although there's nothing wrong with some good organic stuff.

That's awful. Did you ask beforehand what it was going to cost?

$300 for install itself isn't terrible, most shops charge $200-$400...but damn they really bent you over on the gears..eBay and Summit racing have nice Motive sets for $150-$200 ish, I think I bought mine for $140.

For people who don't have time/can't do installs themselves, I always recommend buying everything you need on your own before you get to the shop...gears, install kits, fluid. That way they can only charge you for labor. You'd be surprised (well maybe not now that you experienced it firsthand) what shops make off of parts in profit!

Like Bullshit "Contractors fees" Oh the part was $150 but since I had to spend my time getting it I took the liberty of charging you $250 Always ask before or get receipts

If you were in california and he did that without telling you the price he would be in big trouble. Sorry to hear that, for that much money hopefully they are quite at least?

I've known some shops to 2x 2.5x parts prices. Example brake rotors cost shop 10.00 to make the math easy and they will charge the customer 25.00. doesnt seem that bad with that low of a number but lets say gears at 140, sold at 350!?!?!? Maybe thats how they figure the almost 1000.

Yeah, at least it was a top of the line job. Guess it could have been worse. But, if I knew it was going to be that expensive, I would have just spent another 1000 and got a 12 bolt.

Hold on doesn't it say that you blew apart your first gear set? What else did they have to replace? 1K doesn't sound bad if they replaced bearings, added main cap stud kit, crush collor etc. I think that is pretty much the going rate in California.

They just replaced the gear set, carrier bearings, and pinion bearings. Of course there was the fluid, pinion seal, and cover gasket. Gears~200 bucks, Bearings~20 to 40 bucks a piece from the stealership, Gasket, Seal, and fluids~50 bucks (stealership). Thats about 410 bucks. I should have asked how much it was gonna cost, that is where I messed up.

Shops make a killing on parts. It's reasonable if the shop charges a 15-20% markup on an Ordered part(s). Recently, I just went through the same issue. The shop was going to charge me almost $800 for an Alum-Flywheel and $900 for a center force DF clutch. Mind you, this was just the cost of the parts. This is not the 15-20% markup i was expecting.

As for gear set replacement, Last I was quoted, was just south of $500 which i found somewhat reasonable.
