pewter- 2002 Tans am WS6 M6
3:42 vrs. 3:73
So I have a 2002 Trans Am WS6 M6 with edelbrock shorty headers, slp y pipe, slp lid, slp smooth bellows, knn air filter, slp strut tower brace, and flow master exhaust. Currently I have the stock 3:42 gears and was thinking of going with a set of Richmond 3:73 gears. What do you guys think? Would this be a good upgrade? What type of time could I cut off my 1/4 mile, and what do you think I would be able to run in the 1/4 mile?

I personally think so I mean it a mod to do to your car that isn't going to f up anything. My friend has an ss m6 and he went from 3.42 to 3.73 and I think its a huge difference like a bigger seat of pants mod then the slp long tube headers he did. It just helps keep your car get in its powerband soon and less out of. If I were you with the auto I would go with atleast the 3.42 and top out at 3.73 I mean you dont want to loose all your street ability for just being able to drive from point A to B With the M6 give you go to big then your constanly shifting to the point your looseing the time your trying to gain by shifting. " I dont care who you are or how good you are its still going to take atleast X amount of time to shift!

All Black- 83, 87, 02 All WS6 T/As
General rule of thumb for gearing is auto go 3.73 and stick go 4.10

I think the carrier with 2.73's w/ lsd will house 3.42's just fine, but then again it may not, I want 3.42's myself with my A4. 2.73's are still pretty aggresive street wise but not enough for what I want.

kiddynamit.....you going to love the 4.10's your mpg wont suffer all too bad u might lose 2-3 mpg but thats it and it depedends on how you drive...6th gear wont feel like your just kreepen by someone to pass them you can actully pass them pretty well and at 70 im about 1900 rpm.. i still get 24 on the highway..if there is anything else you wanna know let me know how this helps ya bit

thanks badass! your post did help. did you swap your rearend or just use the stock one? i am planning on using the stock, but have heard lots of negative things about that 10", so i might put the install on hold until i can afford a 9".

i have it in my 10 bolt and i have no problems yet.. you launch on it hard all the time and go to the track all the time your going to have problems with it alot sooner...friend of mind as his with 4.10's as well and he put DR on it and goes to the track all the time with 150 shot and his is still holden for now but it pops a lil..its going to get replaced but mine is still fine...i dont launch had i just wanted something to get up and go quicker without having to do alot of work and it did what i wanted it to do i love them..

a few more questions for you badass, whats a fair price for an install? i heard you also need to "break in" the gear for 500 miles and how big of a difference will i feel when i hammer it from first gear?
-
03-16-2008, 07:38 PM #16
as far as the install go i had a friend of mine do it...kinda had a barbcue thing out of it ..so i wasnt out any money as far the break in period you have to go through it but after you hit 250 with the gears then your good to just hammer on it ....
Insure that the axle has been filled to the correct level with
proper hypoid lubricant before driving the vehicle.
The oil rating must be GL5 or higher.
2.Bring the axle to normal operating temperature by driving the
vehicle (unloaded) for approximately 15 to 20 miles. Do not
run full throttle accelerations or create any shock loads.
3. Let the axle assembly cool completely.
4. For the next 200 miles of operation, drive gently, without any heavy loads
as far as the acceleration goes your going to feel it right off the bat..no more lugging or spinning out real bad just to get ahead of someone easy to just jump right out in fron but you will have to shift alot sooner then you typically would of course..when you actully do hammer on it you will get thown back in your seat
