Rough Idle
I'm having some problems with my Avalanche idling rough. It seems to run fine when I'm on the gas but then gets choppy when I stop and my headlights dim out a little. It even shuts off on me sometimes when I take a tight turn at low speeds. I've tried fuel system cleaner and fuel injector cleaner and neither helped at all. My next step is to change my spark plugs and I'm not sure if that will even help. If anyone has any ideas as to what would be causing this or how to fix it I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!'01 WS.6

Are your catalyitic converters still installed on the truck? They could be plugged. SES light coming on? Flashing?

Yep the cats are still on and no codes have been thrown at all.

Hmmmmmm..... Could be a bad battery too... Once the voltage goes low, all kinds of weird stuff starts happening.

Interesting. I never thought of that. I'll have to get it tested and see what comes up. Thanks

Could also be a vacuum leak, but most likely that would trigger a code.
To add, bad cats do not always throw a code.

Would the cats being bad really make it idle choppy? I've never heard of that before. I also thought about the o2 sensors being bad but I figured that would give me a SES code. Is there a way of checking the cats if there is a problem with them or is that solution just buying new ones?

From what I've experienced, bad cats/clogged cats result in a pretty significant loss of power. You'll also smell it because they are not properly breaking down the NOx and CO pollutants.

Gotcha. I haven't really noticed any difference in smell from my exhaust but then again I haven't really been looking out for something like that. I'll have to check how it smells in the morning.

The only real way to test the converters is to do a back pressure test...

Taking it to a dealer or a shop...
