    No 3rd gear

Well, my transmission is giving up. I've got an '89 GMC 1500 with 120K miles on it. I noticed Sat that 3rd gear was slipping real bad. So Sunday I changed the fluid and it was brown instead of red. I'm assuming the clutches on 3rd are ate up.

Don't know if I want to rebuild or replace the trans. Or just get rid of the truck and get a new one. Not sure I can afford a new one right now.

3rd is direct drive, where the unit is moving together. Sort of like a manual where the input and output shafter are locked together.

Could be the clutches. You can't really know without taking it apart, or having the clutch application chart. I don't have that in front of me. With the forward and direct applied together, the unit is in direct, and it rotates as an assembly. Also know I am generalizing about 4 speed rwd automatic transmissions. In general, they work mostly the same wether it is the hydramatic, Aisin-Worner, Ford, or whomever.

It was the clutch pack. Got it rebuilt for $1300
