just pack it with grease like the gm bulletin has said since 1999. it is a piss poor design.

I never saw the bulletin.
So I will take a closer look at the shaft. Do you have to remove it to pack it with grease?
My 99 had an extended warrantee and the shop replaced the shaft every 20,000 or so...probably 4 times while I had the truck.

no you dont have to remove it. you can just take it loose under the hood and remove the clip, shoot some grease (the kit is like $15) in the shaft, reinstall the clip, push the shaft all way in (works in the grease in the splines), reinstall shaft. pretty easy. its not bad. most dealers get 1.5 hrs labor for this.

the kit comes with grease in a shot and a plug. the plug is for blocking the hole up in the end of the shaft after you've injected the grease in so you can push the shaft together to work the grease around the splines. all the grease does is fill in the slack between the splines of the shafts. makes a cushion so you can't feel the vibration/rattle anymore.

I had my 99 silverados shaft replaced 13 months ago @ close to 65,000 miles. I need it done again at 92,000. It pisses me off! I had the dealership do it last time, think i'll tackle the chore this time.

Yeah, I would like to take it appart myself and see if I can come up with a better design and have one of the local machine shops make it for me.
