04 Silverado need trans temp guage

What's the best way to do a trans temp gauge/small electric fan set up. Can I switch out gauge clusters with a temp gauge made into it from an avalanche or something and it just plug and play?

There are a few places on eBay that'll sell you a. Instrument cluster from a 2500 Silverado that's programmed to work in a 1500. Or they'll add the factory Trans temp gauge to your cluster.

I mounted an aftermarket transmission temp gauge on the center console at the bottom of the dash in our T/A. Probably a whole lot simpler than swapping out a cluster. There should be a port on the driver side of the transmission for your sender.

I like the idea of using the factory cluster gauge. So much cleaner and better looking than aftermarket gauges.

The gauges are one issue, but a trigger for a electric fan to turn on at your desired temperature is another problem. The OEM uses a PTC thermistor built in the transmission's fluid pressure manual valve position switch. The hotter is gets, the lower the resistance. It is tied into the PCM for programmed backup actions plus DIC warning. The PCM provides a 5 volt input signal and monitors the output voltage, which would go up as the temp get hotter. Unless a "PCM" programmer out there, has software to turn on an un-used output driver...this could be used to provide ground to a relay used to operate an aux fan for an external trans cooler.
The other route would be to purchase components to do this. It requires a PTC thermistor, voltage comparator and some knowledge of electrical circuits to provide a signal to operate the fans relay. Like this forum, there are electrical hobbyist that have these type of circuit for the using. With eBay, you can find a 12 volt DC voltage comparator for this similar purpose that are under $10. The sensor and be attached externally to the out going cooling line from the transmission and the turn-on or set point can be adjusted with a pocket screw driver. It will not be water proof (Except for the sensor / wires), but finding a spot inside can't be that hard. With current software in the PCM, it may turn on an "AUX" fan when the tranny's temp gets too high now, tap into that with an extra fan.
With theft, I add a timer board for $3 and a relay with a hidden toggle switch in line with a relay to control spark or fuel. If turn on, I can set the timer to run 2 minutes before the engine shuts off. Endless possibilities with some imagination.

With the car and track supplies on the trailer we are towing just about 7,000 pounds. That makes for a combination weighing in at 13,200 pounds and the trans temp rarely gets past 190 degrees pulling hills. We just have a simple aftermarket transmission cooler mounted in front of the condensor that is plumbed in series with the built in cooler circuit in the radiator. No need for fans, switches or other gizmos.

I you are in the heat of the country and still worried, once you get your transmission temperature gauge installed, just use a toggle switch to supply ground to fan relay when hotter than you want.

Your PCM has inputs that monitor this information already. The PCM also has un-used drivers that can be programmed to provide ground based on certain parameters. For info, go to LT1swap.com, look around, and perhaps give Brendan an email. For $75 with shipping, he may get you set up for an extra "AUX" fan for your tranny cooler if desired if your comfortable doing a little simple wiring. It is not hard.
Best of luck, lots of options and yes, I like to keep it simple as well.
Yes, use a good cooler... it is best practices and cheap insurance as well.
