aftermarket tach problem

what would cause the tach to ground out the engine?
it runs fine without the tach, then when i connect the ground wire the engine turns off. This is on a friends '80 grand prix.

What kind of tach are you hooking up?

The green wire should be on the - side of the coil. Are you runiing a stock HEI dist.?

So your saying you connect the small black wire that is teh ground for the tach and it kills the motor........?

If that what your saying I would be willing to beat the green wire is spliced in to the wrong circuit.

exactly.



The distributor has a built in coil which the green wire goes to.
the red wire goes to the fuse box.

The tach is just a cheap walmart one which i think is the problem cause i have no idea what else it could be.

Take it back and tell him to go to Autozone and buy a cheap ass Sun.
