If it were me, Id put a ls6 crate motor and maybe change the cam. Get the tranny rebuilt and a 3600 stall. Maybe a 150 shot. Should have suspension and tire n wheel money left to boot.

well good sir ...personally i would skip the ls6 ..as it is a gen III and basically a ls1 with some block improvements and new heads.
get a gen IV ...especially a ls2...so get a 408 or 414 ls2 from Texas speed with a FLT 4l60e stage II...this may go over your budget a little ..but nothing much...
as you asked for just engine and tranny combos i left out any mention of other mods driveline etc.
for a set up like so look into a yank pt 4000 or a yank ss 4000

i am curious..not bashing your pick or anything..but why if you had a change to get a new engine..would you pick 1. a gen III and 2. a gen III at 5.7 3. a ls1 with a ls6 intake and heads?
dont get me wrong..the ls6 was a great engine...but it is a revised block with 500 dollar heads (now), a gm hot cam, and a 300 dollar intake.
dont think i am bashing you..i am curious on why people choose the ls6 now.

1)i read in gm high tech performance that swapping a ls6 into a f-body is much easier than a gen IV.
2)i want to stay with a aluminum block and i know of no other gen III that has a alum.block and greater displacement than 5.7.
3)price.$3500 for a ls6 long block (minus the intake,i have a 02 so i already have a ls6 intake)
this is a street car,i really don't have a desire to go drag racing with this car very much.actually the car belongs to my wife, and she can drive very well, but i want to keep the horsepower around 400 at the rear wheels.

I've been looking into the LS3 Hotcam swap for a future project. Its $6500 for the complete engine, then you just need some adaptor harnesses and misc. items.
You can't beat that price for 480HP with OEM performance and reliability. Not to mention a warranty.

you can get a 402 ls alum. short block with a #24 reluctor wheel and put the top end on it you want.

saw a 402 short block in the scroggin-dickey catalog,$4300. minus cam and top end,ls3 block.very good power package but way more than i want to spend.

I think you just answered your own question, the ls6 is perfect for what youre wanting and its a significant upgrade in hp too. Maybe you could put a small cam it it and be at 400-425 to the wheels. Sounds fast with a 150 shot!!!

ok thank you for the input.
1) this is true as there are changes in harness/ sensor position and fuel rail/injectors.
however speartec and such sell adapters for like 200 bucks to make swaping a gen IV into a gen III car. but i understand where you are coming from
2)lq4s are aluminum
3) shit you cant beat that price besides the fact that with your 02 ...you are in a nut shell paying $3500 for a set of 243s and a block
in your case you might as well buy the ls6 as your goals aren't extravagant..but the nice thing about buying a ls2 or gen IV ..is if you ever decide you want more...you have a platform that can do 414+ ci and 500+ to the floor in N/a ...something a ls1/ls6 can not do ....safely

"Daily driver" "reliable" combo for around $8-10K? Do an Eagle 382 stroker kit with your current block, 240ish cam, AFR 205s/TEA 5.3s/similar and a FAST 90, or even keep the LS6 intake. I wouldn't go too big on the 'vertor for a daily, but that's your call. Spend the cash for an extensive dyno/drive tune.
With a similar set-up (but a T56) still using the LS6 intake and not even full bolt-ons, I did 460/450 with a fat/flat curve and excellent driving manners. You will need very sticky tires...

I want to add that the car has 203,xxx miles add I am not planning on swapping engines to simply gain horsepower.more of a mild upgrade on something that has to be replace anyway.
