I run the VR1 racing oil in a couple of the older cars. I've used it for 20+ years without any oil related issues with both flat tappet and roller cams.
The valvoline synthetic is supposed to have a high amount of zinc as well according to the reports if you believe that sort of thing. Something like 1300 ppm. Not bad but not as high as some cam manufactures prefer, if running a flat tappet the cam manufactures like to use a thresh hold of 1400 ppm or more. You can find that in most of the diesel oils,,,of which I am using in one car right now just for giggles.
As far as the valvoline synthetic goes, I run that in both 4th gens. Works good enough for me for what I'm doing with em'.

Valvoline Synpower is much better oil than Valvoline VR1. Racing oil isn't really designed for daily drivers, hence the name and the purpose of it. Synpower will protect your engine much better, reduce friction, and also last longer than VR1 will in your application.

Yup....I agree with Wesman BIG TIMES.Racing oils do not have the detergents and suspension agents street driven cars need....

I would get a UOA just to see what is going on....verify your oil change intervals are good...check for silicon (make sure your air filtration is good)....this is the only way you can ever truly check on how well your oil/filter/OCI's are doing for your car.....I recommend BlackStone Labs.
