I did on my 79 Vette.
Pros of gear timing: Cool winding sound, some say more precise timing, and also no chain to snap at higher RPMS.

Cons: Cool winding sound (some people don’t like it ), it also transmits harmonics from the crankshaft to the cam shaft and vice versa, depending on which manufacture you get might need machine work, and also might not work with your knock sensor.

You can get quiet gear to gear timing sets.

Like he said, I had one in my 69 Chevelle (496 stroker). Only other thing I can tell you is I had to weld a cam button to the timing cover to stop the cam from walking. I think the cam retainer plate in the LS1 would do that for you. I went with a Pete Jackson gear drive(Quiet), was very happy with it.

No hp robbing. Actually will help keep timing more accurate, especially in higher rpm. No chain to flex or stretch.

I have never seen gear drive on a LS1 engine before? Whats a good part number or a site that sells them?
