    rod bearing?

so the other day i heard a knocking noise, so i checked the oil level, and i was 2 quarts low. so i got an oil change, put full synthetic castrol in it. the noise has continued..so im thinkin its a rod bearing or something?

well how do you want us to respond..you know exactly what needs to be done..of course the more and more you drive it the more things will start to fail as a result.

my friends Mach 1 did the same thing. He checked it and it was down 4 qaurts of oil. filled her up and it was still knocking. Had the clutch and throwout bearing replaced and that was a waste of 700$ (dont know WTF he was thinking) He kept driving it and thought he could just keep it easy on it til he could afford to get the bottom end looked at. One day they car just died, now he needs a new bottom end.

My advise, if you are not doing the work yourself, take it to a shop and expect to be paying for a rebuild. If you continue to drive it you could find yourself having to buy a new block.

Does the noise increase with your revs? and if you listen down near your oil pan does it get much louder? If it does thats a good sign for you right there to hang up your keys.

yea i just took it into the pontiac dealership shop. the mechanic said it sounds like a rod knock..thats what i figured. 1000 to tear is down, 2500 to rebuld the bottom end. so im waiting 2 weeks for the money. then fixing it..im gonna be car-less for about a month =(

Knocking noise in the lower end is never a good thing. Stop driving it or you will be spending even more money.

This seems to be one of the most common problems on LS1's. I am constantly reading stories like this. How many miles were on that engine?

Really got to keep an eye on the oil in them if your revving them up at all. They are a bit oil thirsty.

Hell, for $3500 just spend a bit more and get a real motor. Buy a forged short-block.

LS1's like 6qts with the stock filter. Low oil kills em like nothing else. People who are not knowledgeable on it will not check the oil and run the 5.5 qts recommended. These are the ppl with spun bearings. LS1's can EASILY! use 1qt/3K miles...that is 4.5qts sloshing around in there...not good=spun bearing.

use 6qts and check it often and STOP USING 30 WEIGHT MOBIL ONE! IT IS CRAP!
