new to fbodys... but not to working on cars. just trying to find out if i can pull the block (heads, intake, etc removed) out of the car without dropping the cradle? I need to replace the entire motor but I dont have a lift to drop the cradle from under the car. any suggestions? thanks for the help.

I have down it twice from the top. Hood off and I would pull the intake off too.

Did you unbolt it from the tranny or did both come out together. I can't see from the pic. If you did unbolt the trans, did you just take the tranny out first?

Thanks. I think that's what I'll do since I'm a pro at taking the tranny out and I don't think it would be easy to get out by just unbolting the engine (if I could even reach the bolts).

Take the tranny out, can leave bellhousing on and pull intake off. Also take hood off and she will come right out. I have done it three times in the past month. Couple hours of work and it will be done.

Sweet. Leaving that bell housing on is going to save some time and knuckles.

Mine came out with the hood on, motor unbolted at the bell housing. Engine hoist and chains, attached at opposite corners to bolts on the heads.

I just thought of something. What type of threads are those in the side of the heads for attaching the chains?

red- 2001 formula
I just got done replacing the LS1 engine in my 2001 formula. I did a lot of research on which way to drop the engine out. I eventually took it out thru the bottom. I have never done a car like that but I found it to be real easy. Advantages to removing from the bottom are dont have to remove manifold and all wiring on engine dont need to be disconnected prior to removal. Just unplug main harness from computer and also connector plug from under dash board and a few other minor things. The cradle is held on with six bolts and unbolt both shock towers and steering joint and the brake lines and you are ready to drop engine. If you go out thru the top you must undo the radiator and fans anda/c condensor and thats not an easy job. I bought a motorcycle jace and positioned it between the oil pan and cradle and used my floor jack on the tranny oil pan. I used my engine hoist and used chains from the shock towers and hoisted up the car high enough to get the cradle to clear and rolled the engine and trannyout and then relowered the car down. Once you have the unit out everything is real easy to swap over. I was scared at first about this way of doing it but after it was all done I feel it was easier that going out thru the top. Good luck
