    One ported head vs another...

What is the difference between lets say a patriot head and an AFR head as far as porting goes? There both ported, so what makes the more expensive head so much better?

AFR uses their own castings. Patriot ports stock lsx heads. Patriot can't touch the new AFR castings.

thats it in a nut shell......

patriot, buys stock GM heads, and modifys them.
AFR is an aftermarket head, with many benifits.

the choice will be in your budget and goal for the car.

    small-med H/C .... patriot
max output H/C, or FI..... AFR

Answer to this is, There are different extremes of porting. The ones im fimilar with are, pocket port, tear drop, and gasket match. Basically its how much work has been done to them.

So i guess if you have a FI or max effort N/A car, it is better to go with the top of the line head. But what about if you want max power on spray? Will the better head make that much of a difference?

For any power adder the AFR heads will hold up better and produce more hp.

I know it will be more HP with the AFR's, but how much more? 10 HP? & how will they hold up better?

If you can afford an extra grand for AFR just to gain bragging rights on top flow number when you're at peak rpm go for it. Otherwise it's a waste of money over the patriots. http://edigras.iweb.bsu.edu/headscam.htm

Nice info! So I guess "budget" doesent mean bad? I guess the AFR's are for people that have the extra cash & dont care about comparisons, they just want the better heads.

Your welcome, the ls7 setup is even cheaper than the patriots but requires a bigger bore. Those also out perform AFR

The AFR's will have thicker sections over a ported stock GM casting, so if you are spraying or FI that would be more reason for an aftermarket casting such as AFR, DART, etc. The heads are structurally more robust when finished. Patriot does nice heads though and a lot of guys make good power and are happy with them. But for spray or FI, aftermarket castings would be stronger.
