+1.. head gaskets are fairly cheap and you could do all the work in a day...
if your planning on going with a cam or something later.. then yes i would go ahead and upgrade to a better head.... if nothing else buy some stock ls6 heads or something.. if you have the money go for some ported ls6s or 5.3s... and if you are looking to get some nice heads, go for some AFRs or TFPs

I'd make damn sure of where it's coming from before I pull the head.

I have a problem with my dipstick tube leaking on an LT1 on that same side as your leak. Is the LS1's dip stick on the same side? I bought a new TB and decided to not run the pcv hose to the TB and just put a small breather on the valve cover. Now because I am not sucking the crank case air out of the motor, pressure builds and the dip stick tube is one of the spots mine tries to vent from and it gets all over the block and starter. I need to put a bigger breather on it but some food for thought anyway.

The rule of thumb is start from the top of the motor and work your way down. Valvecover gasket are extremely easy to do and cheap at that. Also take a look around the cam sensor and the oil pressure sending unit, chances are its not coming from there, but it is possible. Clean everything up and go drive and I would run a little thicker oil, 5-30 should do the trick.
