    MLS Head Gasket Woes

I'm in the process of getting my heads machined because one is warped (badly installed head bolts) anywho, I was looking to buy MLS head gaskets this time around. My first question, my internals are stock so what bore do I get a 3.905" or a 3.910"? Also, I know about the thickness raises and lowers compression, what thickness should I go with? My mods are MS4, PP heads, PP TB, and all free mods... Thanks in advance.

    Stock head gaskets are MLS.

What compression are you at now? Since the heads were off for the port...what gasket was on there?

sorry, i meant to say that now I'm going to buy cosmetic MLS gaskets. As for compression, I'm pretty sure i'm still running the stock 10.1 to 1 (the heads were stock LS6 heads). The gaskets that were on there were the stock replacements from GM.

.054" cometics then will maintain stock compression.

Thanks for the help. Also, what bore size should I run on the cosmetic gasket 3.910 or 3.905? Or does it really matter?...

3.905 is what I would run.

Hi guys, sorry to bring this thread back from the dead. I just remembered that when I installed the heads I used the stock graphite gaskets for 1998-2001 ls1's. I was wondering if the stock MLS gaskets for 2002 ls1's would solve my problem, or should I still go cosmetic? I feel stupid for not mentioning this earlier.

Solve what problem? GM MLS gaskets compress to 0.052", if you are looking for 0.040" then you must go to Cometic.

You know what...now that you say that...
    I honestly can't remember.
I think you might be right. Damn...been 3 years since I took that bastard out.

They were....I remember cleaning the shit off the heads now.

I hate when I give out bad info. I recalled removing the heads after claying to check clearance...but those were cometics.

Stock replacement is MLS now though isn't?? From GM?

Depends on the head you use. Some of the heads, don't remember which casting number, have a little notch on the outside below the exhaust ports in the sealing surface. If you use those heads with a MLS gasket, they will most probably leak; use of a graphite gasket it a must with them. For all other heads, a MLS setup works.

The notch-heads you describe are from 98s and yeah, they use that graphite gasket.

The rest should be MLS. It doesn't mean that you don't have to clean up after them when they are gone though.

Well, those are the heads I have on mine right now and they are't '98 heads ... well, atleast they're "not" perimeter bolt like the '98 heads and are center bolt. I think they're from the trucks?

I could have spit out a ton of casting numbers and specs years ago. I use it so little now that it is all but gone

the head casting i know for sure that are centerbolt valve cover as 862 (4.8/5.3L) and 853 (5.7L). even then it was random. i've seen 853 without the notches. and yes, if you use a MLS with the notched head, it will leak. been there, tried it and watched the water pour out of the notch area while i was filling teh radiator.

With that cam and milled heads, I hope you plan on checking PTV prior to bolting the heads in place. You may be below minimums (I believe the MS4 is even without milling).

I plan to. The MLS gaskets should give me enough room to maintain stock compression and PTV room. I'm only going to authorize the minumum on milling.
