LS1 Cam HP vs. Torque
Curious about what anybody has to say about a cam that has more TQ than Horsepower . After reading hundreads of threads about cams--I see that most cams have more HP than TQ--Mine is opposite--Is this a good thing or bad ? Any advantages or dis-advantages--It is a mild .221 @114 Calif smog legal--daily driver-occasional weekend racer--Any particular reason why it was ground that way ? It is a TPIS cam. 380 RWHP //// 404 FT LBS TQ

Depends what you want out of your engine. Horsepower is just a function of torque.
hp= (tq x RPM)/5252
It has to do with how high it revs as well as the cam characteristics and dynamic compression. Since your cam is so mild, it probably gives a good idle with low-end torque. But probably poops out on the top-end, which is why you have more peak torque than horsepower.

Damn i was just about to do a cam swap, i live in CA too. But i didn't know the cam would make me fail my smog test when that comes up in two years. What are my options for cams that will still allow me to pass smog.

carrol shelby always said that torque wins races and horse power gets all the glory and sells all the parts.

If you are street driving the car, it's more fun that way especially from light to light. You don't want to have to spin the engine to 6500 plus to get the car to really move.

YES I did pass smog---I was worried about the headers mostly and then the cats---But the guy never looked under the car--and where the headers are it is so crowded and busy he looked down there but didn't say a word !!! I was elated---As far as the test---The car was actually cleaner then when I had it smogged 2 years ago (only had cold air box and catback exhaust then) I had saved the print out and compared the 2.

tblu92, thats cool...
I hate when the man tries to spook us into believing how "dirty" modified cars are... when tuned right, they pass the sniffer better than stock.
they need to sh*t-can the visual inspections 4 smog.

I even had my air pump unplugged and the MIL's turned off- but stil there--Also had block off plates in the air-tube header connections--I didn't have big enough balls to leave my atmospheric breathers on so I put the plugs back in-NOS solenoids wrapped in black electric tape--not removed--

Wow... that IS ballsy. I havn't had my camaro long at all, but I've got the itch for more power and I'm worried about visual inspect. when I've gotta smog it eventually. really sucks... oh well...
