Looking at buying heads
Should i go with the 241s or start looking for something different? Im looking for a set to start building on for when i put my cam in, that why i just have to swap to the already built set of heads and drop the cam in. Just looking for 500 ish HP on a A4 car. Any advice would be nice.

Yeah i got plenty of time, plan to buy them then start building them up. However i want the best thing i can pick up on the cheap like this, whats the benefit the other heads have over the 241 heads?

243s will get you 20 hp more unported.look at some cnc TSP heads,or trick flow 220cc cast heads.

You won't get near 500 rwhp with 241's and especially with an A4.
I have CNC'd 243 heads and a 228/232 cam, LS6 intake, LT's and borla on a 99 A4 and dynoed at 392 on a load bearing with 20x10 rear wheels (~420-430 rwhp on a dynojet). I know my wheels cost me a few hp, but I am no where near 500 rwhp.
Just added a ported 92, but haven't gotten to dyno it yet.

Just going for as close as i can get, 450 would be more then fine. Gonna throw Nitrous at it anyway.

Oh, well with nitrous, it would be possible. But for N/A, 450rwhp is the limit where most ppl start having issues with the rear-end going out from what I have seen. Of course you can hit that 500 mark with enough money and the proper build, but that would involve dropping some serious money on name brand heads, as well as all the other necessary supporting upgrades (which should be done on any H&C car really).
Also a stalled A4 will make low numbers on a dyno, but can hold its own on the track/street.

Would a set of 5.3 heads be the same as the 241s? Im pretty sure they arent but not 100%. guy wants 30 bucks for them and im thinking of picking them up. Are they worth doing the work on to swap on the car or again should i just find 243's and stop trying to be a cheap ass.

243's if complete have Sodium filled intake valves and hollow exhaust valves which shave valvetrain weight. They flow better out the box and up the compression. I would go with at least 243's and work them a bit. Thats just my .02

Not all 243's are equipped with sodium filled valves. Earliest z06's and gto's.

Not sure if GTO heads came with them Thought just Z06's. You can tell the difference by the yellow valve springs.

blacker than wesleysnipes- 98' trans am
to the OP let me set something straight about the F-body oem heads...........there is not shit difference in their flow numbers and such. they are all basically the same. with the big exception of the 806s as they are perimeter style. There are obviously small changes done between the 806, 853s and the 241..but trust me nothing worth a damn to show up on the dyno, or enough to warrant a change
here is some food for thought
