    Lifters

A friend of mine has a constant tapping sound going on that has basically been narrowed down to a weak lifter. My question is do we have to pull the head to change lifters?

Yes you have to pull the heads.

Nice head swap howto. Same process to access lifters. Might as well put better heads on while you're at it!

See sig, I did all of that (Except Suspension and bolt ons) due to a lifter Have to pull the heads so I said lets get better ones. Getting better heads, should just do a cam also to compliment heads. Doing a cam, etc.....

It sucks but its not really that hard if you have the tools and some time.

I'm in the middle of this now with my 5.3 truck engine. It hasn't been too bad except for one of the 3 bolts on the exhaust would NOT come loose! But I have a flame wrench and wasn't afraid to use it. Glad I only have to do the driver side. Once I got the manifold off it was a chore to get the bolt out but I got it. Once the head's off the lifters are accesable.

I found a lifter the clip came out of and it was making some serious clacking noise.

Replace all 16 with OEM replacements (they are LS7's now...even if you ask for the LS1 lifters).
Although, I would recommend asking if they are the 'updated' part number....they should be but some place may have some originals still sitting on the shelf.
