Are there any advantages to the 5.3 heads over the ls1 heads? I am looking to swap in new heads on my 02 LS1.

on stock 5.3 heads you will have higher compression, but they dont flow the same as ls1 heads and they have smaller valves. If you get them ported they will be an improvement

stock 5.3 and stock LS1 have the same cc volume 200/70 the difference is in the valves. 5.3 heads have smaller valves. Most aftermarket 5.3's have larger valves anyhow. I know my PRC's stage 2.5's have 2.04 intake 1.575 exhaust valves. The 5.3 heads have a smaller combustion chamber at 61cc's raising your compression a little without milling.
