Head/Cam Questions
First off let me just say that I know very little about cams and heads but I really want to learn. With so many decent sounding head deals(namely PRC and Patriot) which heads would be a good bet for around 400rwhp. I keep looking on Texas Speed's site and seeing those damn PRC heads for so cheap, is it as good of a deal as it sounds? Also Speed inc has a heads/cam package for Patriot LS6 heads and any comp cam grind for dirt cheap. So here's what I'm looking at:
Texas Speed
PRC Stg 2.5 5.3L Heads
and either the Texas Speed Torquer v.2 Camshaft(112 LSA)
or the Texas Speed 228R Camshaft(112 LSA)
Speed Inc.
Patriot CNC Stage 2 Ported Heads
Comp cams SI5 231 237 .589 .595 112 LSA
I'm going for a choppy Idle so that's why the 112 lsa but please give me some input on the direction I'm headed.

Just to let you know its overlap that gives you a choppy idle not the LSA,even thought the LSA play a part in it.
first cam will have 4* of overlap
second cam will have 10* of overlap so it will be choppier
and I just did my Heads with a cam I have had for awhile and made over 400
heres the set up
Comp 238/242 .605/.610 110+2 (20* of overlap)
PRC's LS6 heads CNC'd with Comp. vavle job
Comp "R" lifters
Comp 7.400 pushrods
PRC dual gold springs
all bolt on's
through a Magnaflow catback did 420rwhp and 380rwtq now thats locked and through a 3800 stall and a Moser 12bolt rear
so if I have a 6-speed (dont know if you do) and stock rear end it would be around 440ish

Thanks for the good knowledge on overlap=choppy. I see you have over .600" lift, how much lift would be reasonable on a stock bottom end and still have good valve clearance. Also how much lift would be too much lift? Too little? One more thing what rocker arms are you running and what would be a good set up, money wise. I see Scogin-Dickey has those new scorpian rockers, they seem to be a good deal.

well I am not a cam expert just so you know, but I think a .600 lift cam is fine for a DD, but it all depends on the vavle size you use.
I am still running stock 1.7 rockers

well considering I am running the Patriot Performance Stage II Ls6 "Style" heads (2.02"/1.57" @ 59cc chambers), and gained 33rwhp, and 24rwtq on just a little Comp Cam 224/224 .581/.581 @112lsa, i say go for that package.
another reason I suggest you go for that package is because i currently have a TSP 231/237 .598/.595@ 112+2 lsa I'm waiting to put in it. with the setup I am currently running i already have over 400rwhp...

any advice on getting a good heads/cam package to get over 400+ to the wheels? and any idea what the tq numbers would be on a otherwise stock ls1? thanks

yeah, look above in post #5 for the answer(s) to your questions...
stock RWHP/RWTQ ranges from 290/290 - 320/320 depending on whether a car is a factory freak or not and if is a TA/Z28 or a WS6/SS. for example mine dyno'd 328/330 with only a lid and SLP LM catback (damn close to stock you can be)...

You don't really need heads to get to 400 RWHP. I'm sitting there with a
.224/.228 .591/.591 with 114LSA and I'm about to go hire once I install my headers and retune it. I should be at 415 to 420 after the install and tune. You will need better valve spring though to go with a cam that big.

hmm. ok. i was talking to a couple of friends and one suggested a .222/.228 .567/.567 with 113 lsa. rpm range being 2000-6600.. would this particular cam get me closer and would it be a good one for a dd?

I would watch those patriot heads though. What I have heard is they are factory rejects and they have alot of problems even after they have been remachined. I put on dart heads. 800 less then the AFR's.

That could possibly do it but I would try to possibly get a larger lift cam. Mine that I stated above is in a DD and its still a very nice DD.

bought the heads new from a member off here for $900 and at the time a cam only package for $700 that contained:
ls6 oil pump
ls2 timing chain
comp 224/224 .581/.581 @112 lsa camshaft
Comp 7.400" pushrods
Tit. reatiners
bases
Patriot Dual Gold spring good for a .650 lift
all the valvetrai stuff are still on my stock heads. i bought the Stage II heads fully assembled...
so about $1600...

im not sure where you got your info from but i would like to clear up that mis-information. the Stage II heads that I have are 6.0L heads that were casted to be truck heads. patriot welds up the heads to achieve the CC chamber size, they do not mill them down like other heads companies do. ive run about 1500 miles since installing the heads in Jan of this year and have had 3 track passes on them and there have been no issues with them what so ever...
im also sure that if you called patrtiot and talked to Gunnar, he would be able to go into even greater detail to let you know they are not 'factory rejects'...

h/c setup
this is the setup that I have chosen to go with along with other mods:
patriot stage 2 heads 59cc
comp cam 224/224 .581/.581 112
after this and other supporting mods I'm hoping to be in the 11's. That will make me happy!

that's my exact current setup and i love it...
you have a mid/low 12sec car if you got the 'driver mod' after the H/C is installed and with other supporting mods...
btw, are you an M6 or A4? if an A4, i recommend at least a 3000 stall as well...
also, FWIW, this would be a strong setup as well...

He should be over 400RWHP and 380 ft/lbs of torque so i'd say he should hit 11's if he has tire and full bolt-ons
