    Cams?

What kinda cams for an ls2 engine. I don't want a rough idle and i need power around mid range. The ls2 start at 405 horses, throw a cam in and they are at 490's. It's sick. but what kind. as previously stated, smooth idle if possible. Also should i even go with the ls2 engine, i found it new for 5300 and i don't think i can put one together ready to rock for less than that.

490 at the fly is more like it rather than the rear tires. My buddy in his GTO put in a big cam, LT's, and a FAST manifold with some other bolt ons and put about 470 rwhp

Wait, the LS2 is 400 to the wheels or to the crank?

hate to burst yours but a mod responded to his question and obviously didnt care. why do you?

get a cam with narrow centers (113-115) if you dont want any chop. go with a smaller cam, something at or around 230 duration.

Chop refers to the idle being choppy or rough,
wide LSA's (Lobe Seperation Angle) 115+ will have smoother idles and broaden the powerband
tight LSA's 112 and under will have more of a lope at idle a peakier powerband and will usually produce more mid range torque

Damn man that's nasty. I didn't know the ls2 was that much better. I would imagine an ls1 would be around 430 rwhp with the same mods.

Yeah, i was reading an article, i'll have to go back and try to find it (pretty informative), and they stated that one who dares to unleash the true power just throw in a cam and I was thinking like 30 MAYBE 40 HP gain, but then another article about how MTI tested them with just a stage 3 performance cam, (again, i'll have to relocate these) said it threw it all the way to 496. 96 HP from $400, not too shabby!

Thanks for the angle clarification, i definetly don't want a choppy idle, i like it smooth, strong and sweet soundin.

OH and I am a new member. Not exactly sure where to go specifically to post threads, i just figured anywhere but if there is a more appropriate place, i understand. Thanks for the assistance

Whats a good cam for an LS1 and a good one for LT1?
I am looking for something that will sound nice, even at idle, and just the best preformance over all. I seen voodoo cams pretty cheap and then I see comp cams at like 300-400 dollars and the vooddoo was like 127

The LSA will have that effect on cams of the same durations. However LSA is not what equals "chop" Overlap ="chop"

    Example cam 1 218/224 on a 112

    cam 2 238/240 on a 114

Which one do you think will lope harder??? It is not even close. Cam #2 will sound like it is about to eat your children.

A cam swap is MUCH more involved than just buying a cam.
$400 for the cam is just the beginning.

Valvesprings, pushrods, gaskets, tools, etc. are needed as well.
